He stated that Iowa had a positive attitude this year and the new athletic center has really helped recruiting. However, he did say we had a few minor question marks. The first being we have to develop two new DT's and two new OT's. (minor problem) Then he said the new QB had started only one game, but the B/U had made great strides even though he has never been on the field. Oh, I almost forgot; we don't have a punter.

I must have missed this but will go back and listen for it. I find this comment telling as there is no vote of confidence yet for CJ and he could be laying the groundwork for pulling CJ by talking up the strides made by the back-up. I can recall a number of comments last year down-talking CJ referring to his performance with the 'what we saw in practice' type of stuff. This could reveal what is suspected in that KF never wanted CJ but his hand was forced. We all know we are most likely dead if CJ goes down and the back-up plays next year. What's the purpose at this point in talking him up with no game experience after just talking down CJ with 1 start?

Bottom line is CJ's gunslinger mentality scares the crap out of KF but it's exactly the juice this program needs.

What the hell are you talking about? No vote of confidence? Ferentz named Beathard the starter at QB shortly after the bowl game -in January - an unprecedented move by Ferentz while at Iowa.

Go ahead and create a ridiculous conspiracy theory if you want but, I'm sorry, once a player is named the starting QB, that expressly communicates that you have the coach's vote of confidence.

What are you talking about? There was an impending mutiny in the fan base at the end of last year and I would bet Barta had a hand in the unprecedented decision to release that depth chart. They knew putting CJ would be apeasing to a degree. There is no way KF does that on his own. Guess what the fans spoke with another drop in season ticket sales anyway.

I feel more love from CJ's teammates for him than the head coach. What's wrong with a statement stating we are looking forward to CJ playing to see if he can spark the team? Instead of what was said with that instead of praising the strides of the back-up? Jake got much more love the last 2 years.

I'm talking real world facts. You're talking fantasy land conspiracies.

lol just keep adding to the conspiracy theory

With that real world fact of a January depth chart I am blown away. The one you stated was unprecendented but there was no underlying motivation there. KF felt so inspired he made an unprecedented decision to do that. Yet when it comes time to start the year after that unprecedented display, CJ gets the 'only started one game' vote of confidence. Yep outlandish theory.

I don't think they get it, not hard to understand.

I'm sure you've got your blame KF excuses ready in case sunbeam fails. lol

You joined up for that single post? What did you do join up again so it looks like you got a buddy to agree with you?
New members aren't allowed to post??? Is this a "HR vets only thread?" Type of answer I'd expect from you, since I was a member for years and just now continued.

Continue reading too much into a non-issue. And don't worry, a 5-7 season is only two months away and Kirk will be out, so you won't have to moan and gripe and complain on here for too much longer.

I want to be clear about something and that is I want to see good football and win games. I would hope that would be with Kirk. What I am sick of this poor old Iowa, scared of our own shadow approach to football. We need some energy, hunger, passion and desire from the top dog not 'business as usual'. CJ strikes me as someone that others can rally around and he has some physical tools too. If you listen to player comments and interviews you can sense they like CJ. If you attend a basketball game at carver and see players from the team do a half time dance with the cheer squad there is CJ participating. That's a silly example but yet shows he's liked and cares about his teammates.

He may flame out but i want to see him out there. Let it fly CJ and let's try to make something happen. The last thing I want to see or hear is the head coach downgrading him.

That's fine but you don't need to conjure up fairy tales about the coach's state of mind to make your expectations or hopes known.

For instance, as I've said before, Ferentz' conservative play calling is sometimes maddening and has led to several needless defeats. However, I did not speculate, as some do, that his propensity for risk aversion proves that he doesn't care any more or that he is no longer interested in winning.

From the transcript of media day:

Again, very, very happy with the development that CJ has demonstrated.

Maybe that would have been a stronger endorsement with just one more "very". I never believe it when there's only 1 "very". 2 "verys" is still open to conjecture. 3 "verys" is proof that they really, really, really mean it. He did say "again" though.

I think the combination of the two "verys" and the word "happy" is a good sign, so I wouldn't sell the comment short. It would have been better if he used the word "thrilled" instead of "happy", so maybe this is just a motivational ploy to let CJ know that there's still work to do. Now if he had used the word "pleased" or "content" instead of "happy" then, yeah, KFz is clearly throwing CJ under the bus.

Lots of crazy shite on this board lately but this takes the cake.

Other KF quotes from Thursday pertaining to CJ:

"He's got a live arm, there's no doubt about that. He'll throw it in tight spaces. The thing we're all most happy about is his judgment of when to throw it in those tight spaces has improved a lot from a couple years ago. He's always been very, very talented."

"He's got a good heart. He looks at the world in a way you would hope all people do. And he cares a lot about all the people he's around. So that's a good starting place."

"Even cutting his hair, it was a charity thing, which doesn't surprise me."

"He was raised right. He's got a lot of empathy for people. Certainly he's demonstrated a lot of maturity in the past 6-8 months. It's been fun to watch him."

It would appear that someone put a vice on KF's marbles to squeeze those quotes out of him. Or maybe he was drunk.

He we go .... more spin from the pro-KFz crowd. It should be clear to anyone with half a brain that KFz a mocking CJ with these comments. Allow me to explain ....

"He's got a live arm, there's no doubt about that. He'll throw it in tight spaces. The thing we're all most happy about is his judgment of when to throw it in those tight spaces has improved a lot from a couple years ago. He's always been very, very talented."
Once again, Kirk can't say a positive thing without recalling a negative ... implying that CJ used to make bad throws, most likely in practice. And that crack about being "very talented" is a really low blow. Talk about a thinly veiled reference to Ruddock being the smart one!

"He's got a good heart. He looks at the world in a way you would hope all people do. And he cares a lot about all the people he's around. So that's a good starting place."
Good heart? That's it? What about his lungs, his liver, his spleen ....!?!?!?!?! C'mon, CJ's the total organ package but stubborn KFz refuses to acknowledge what every fan who can walk and chew gum at the same time can see. He'll never give CJ full credit because then it would look like he was wrong and the fans were right. I bet he could taste the bile welling up in his stomach when he said this.

"Even cutting his hair, it was a charity thing, which doesn't surprise me."
This one is so obvious I can't believe a guarded guy like Kirk said it out loud and in public. KFz is clearly saying that he wasn't going to let CJ see the field until he cut his hair, period, end of sentence. Go corporate or go to the bench! If he had to do it all over again, Donnal wouldn't have seen the field last year.

"He was raised right. He's got a lot of empathy for people. Certainly he's demonstrated a lot of maturity in the past 6-8 months. It's been fun to watch him."
"He was raised right" .... OMG, where to begin. He can't give CJ any credit. Nope .... none at all. The credit clearly goes to the parents on this one, not CJ. Kirk's pretty much saying that CJ would be a socially inept moron if he wasn't fortunate enough to be born with parents. I don't know how CJ can take it - he's made of some pretty tough stuff.

And1Hawk is right......................Ferentz obviously hates Beathard and hopes that he fails. Ferentz isn't fooling anyone with these comments. You would have to be a complete moron to not be able to see Kirk's lack of trust in and outright hate for Beathard with these comments.

It is sad that you continue to believe that CJ doesn't have anything other than KF's complete confidence. KF strongly supports all of the players on his team. Obviously, some are better than others, hence he has to decide who to play (and who sits), but regardless of who gets to play, he stands behind each and every player in his program, or he wouldn't include them in the program.

KF didn't decide to promote CJ on his own; the decision to name CJ the starter was reached after discussion amongst the entire coaching staff. His statements to this effect are well-documented.

I get that you're frustrated, but avoid the temptation of thinking CJ is some sort of red-headed step-child, because he isn't. I, like you, want the team to play better. KF does, too. I don't work for him, but my kid plays for him, and I have talked to KF and seen him at work, on many occasions. He wants the program to be successful, and his doing his best to make it happen. Is he the best coach for the job? I think so, but time will tell. I sure hope the Hawks have a GREAT year. I think all Hawk fans do.

That's true. We all want to see success from the team going forward and hopefully that is under KF. Nothing would be better than to stop taking boat loads of crap from other fan bases. KF's comments were very positive about CJ which I find super refreshing so I was wrong. Will not be the first time and glad to be wrong.

What I will say though is two things. In my early post I said more or less that my comments were in reaction to what the OP had posted about what was said and that I would go back and listen/read all that there was ... which I did. I am glad what the OP said was not all that there was. Second the message boards contain some posters as expected who really contribute nothing about the program or sport. Your post was not like that so it is much appreciated to get good information.

Shineshine, not Sunbeam.

These theories would be much better with some youtube videos to back them up.

The January depth chart thing was very weird.

I don't believe KF fully trusts CJ but it's kind of a desperate times desperate measures move for him IMO.

He knows CJs got much better physical tools than JR but He also knows he's going to take allot more chances.
