I Hate...

In recent years, the titles have gone but the hate has remained. Might as well start winning titles again, since we'll always be hated, no matter how much success we have.;)
has it really? - in years past at these tourneys (midlands/BiGs/Nationals) when an Iowa guy lost there was always a loud cheer from random places - Haven't heard that in awhile.

It may have died down a little, but the crowd is still typically against the Iowa guy, at least in my experience. And the Iowa hatred is alive and well in cyber space, at least from what I gather. I don't bother reading any cesspools other than this one.

I'd agree as I didn't hear it at big 10s last year but certainly heard it in Columbus, Madison, St. Louie and NYC. The hate / jealousy is still there and will always be there. Now if King Carl wins 9 or 10 in a row it may change - then again since he is such a fun guy there may not be any hate.

Trust me, Iowa is still very much hated. If you would have spent just a small amount of time on thematforums after Gilman/Terao, you would have no doubt remaining. As far as NCAA's go, if Iowa is in contention you will hear a very similar anti-Iowa crowd. They just aren't as boisterous when you are battling for 3rd instead of 1st.

9 or 10 in a row was just part of the "hate" for us in the 80's and 90's and "might" become the hate for PSU. It wasn't just that we were winning all those titles but how. 30, 40 even 50 pt leads heading into the finals at times. But it was even more past that, the process of our guys breaking other wrestlers, or our guys just physically manhandling competition(even other top competition at times)

AND then you add in our fan base. The home crowds and all of the records we have set and continue to set. The amazing amount of fans that we take on the road for duals, and especially for tourneys. So much fun in places where people don't expect us to get to so heavily, but yet there we are(remember how freaking cold it was in Albany??, yet there were more Iowa fans out at the bars and restaurants then most of the other teams combined).....I can go on, but you get the point

It's just different at Iowa, special. Kind of like Kevin Costner said in Field of Dreams when asked "if this was heaven" and of course, he says , "no, it's Iowa". Cheesy?, well maybe a bit, but something to it in the wrestling world:)........the winning may have started it, but it's more than that now.

Go Hawks and here's to being hated, and hated even more in the not too distant future!!!!

We Iowa fans can be pretty good at dishing it back too. I remember driving into St. Louis in 2009 for the medal round on Sat morning. I saw a great session where we wrapped up the team championship in the wrestlebacks. I remember an Ohio State wrestler losing and our crowd going crazy. He was not even wrestling a Hawk opponent. The Ohio State wrestler looked right up to the Iowa crowd and did a double squeeze of the crotch. A second roar from the Iowa crowd.
Also saw Metcalf lose later that night and we beat Ohio State. Their 184 lb had to win to give them the title.

Which is it, did you wrap up the title in the wrestlebacks, or when Pucillo lost to Hebert?

Just kidding, by the way. Your memory sounds like mine. But do you think that maybe the Bucknut wrestler losing might have helped lock up the championship? And just guessing, but that might have been Lance Palmer.

I was at 3 out of the past 4 NCAA tournaments. Believe me, the anti-Iowa cheers/boos are still very prevalent. More so than any other team and it's not very close. Even in years when Iowa wasn't in the running for the team title, Iowa wrestlers were still getting boo'd.

It may have been Palmer. We did not wrap up until Herberts win but we won because of what the team did in the wrestlebacks. Our Heavy head a great win against Iowa State and Morningstar beat Moza Fay.

The loudest arena got the loudest cheer later that night in the championships when Caldwell beat Metcalf. I was sitting on floor level seats surrounded by Ohio State guys. I was crushed and got to cheer in their faces when they lost at 184 and we won the team trophy.

...Alabama football!

Iowa wrestling used to be hated because of their consistent success and great fan base. I want to be hated again!
Iowa wrestling is more intimidating than Alabama football. IMHO, Iowa is still the most intimidating wrestling program and that makes a victory over an Iowa wrestler a big deal, especially in the lower weights where Iowa is always tough.

The matches that stick with me most are ones where a Hawkeye was bested. Mostly because it's an accomplishment to beat a Hawkeye and no one hates to loose more than an Iowa wrestler.

Some matches that are most memorable to me include:
Gilman loosing to a Missouri wrestler a few years ago in a match that was basically a fight.
Ramos getting pinned by a UNI wrestler not long after scowling at him.
Metcalf loosing to the NCSt wrestler in the NCAA championship.

Just have to listen on Friday night at nationals when an Iowa wrestler is defeated. A better analogy of our program would be Duke. Bama at least has the hardware to go w their swank in recent yrs

More like Kevin Costner in "Waterworld"! To be really honest, Iowa is more like Dennis Hopper in Waterworld. or Dark Vader in Star Wars. In the end they lose! :) As long as PSU is getting most of the top recruits all we can do is pray for skater Tanya Harding to comes out of retirement and be a Iowa wrestling fan. She already looks like a Iowa women

Well that is one way to look at it, just not my way. I have chosen and will continue to feel that we have a great thing here at Iowa. Is it what it was 15 years ago?, maybe not from the titles aspect but most everything else is. Keep in mind however, the D-1 wrestling landscape itself has changed as well. I won't delve into that debate, but I still think this is the best place for kids to wrestle and it's certainly the best place for wrestling fans. Do I want to win titles again? Hell yes, and I think we will, but until that comes, I am keeping my Iowa wrestling glass half full even if some of us choose to keep it half empty.

Go Hawks

Now with that said, I never found Tonya to be an attractive woman, but she has not filled out nicely. :)

Just an outsiders perspective, without invoking fat ugly mean women-could the cheering against Iowa wrestlers perhaps mean that each time a Hawkeye loses, aids another team in catching up and/or passing them in the team race? Maybe not hate, just old fashioned self-interest?
