I've said it for a couple years that Fran is a gimmick coach. What I meant by that is he's johnny one note. His game is to push the ball up the court and play finesse ball. That's fine early in the season, but teams make adjustments and don't let you get as many fast break points. They make you play a half court game, and once the officials reverted back to letting guys play more physical, Iowa was lost because they are a soft team. Not just mentally soft, but physically soft. Fran has a bunch of sticks on his team, but doesn't have the needed wide bodies to play in the B1G. Fran should know by now he's coaching in the B1G, not the MAAC, you need to play physical. Finesse ball isn't going to cut it in this league, and Fran has made no adjustments, either in coaching philosophy or recruiting to deal with this reality. This is because he's a gimmick coach, who got away with this style of ball in the MAAC but it won't work in the B1G. He either wakes up to this situation and changes, or he needs to go.
The reason Izzo is such a great coach is he can beat you in a slugfest, or he can beat you running up and down the court. His teams can bang you around if needed, but they can also play uptempo if you want to do that. Fran's teams are terrible in the halfcourt, where a team gets physical with them.
