I miss Dr. Tom.

Huh?? Go back and take Dr Tom's first three years at Iowa and look at what he did in NCAAs.....

That is all. This crap rarely happened with him. How I miss those halcyon days.
He only made it out if the first weekend twice during his tenure??? Plus orchestrated the 2nd half fold against UNLV 25 years ago. NO THANKS! His Big Ten record was .500 over all that time. He needed to go years earlier. This program is pathetic.

Better, but still mediocre to bad.
Maybe so but it takes a concerted effort by an assertive AD to not recruit crap coaches and give them extensions like participation medals that kids receive. Give it based on merit not feelings or connections.

Fran isn't a crap coach. He took the program off the dark ages of Lickliter and they have been good. Not great, good. Recruited good guys who are good citizens, graduate and play hard. But giving him ridiculous buyouts and lengthy extensions is just dumb.

Mark me down as a Tom Davis fan, but other than his final season, he too also got owned in 2nd round games (with his own recruits, that is).

Iowa should have hired Dana Altman instead of Todd Lickliter, it seems.

Correct. Probably would have made another had Street not died.

Maybe more than one. That would have changed everything that happened afterward. In fairness to McCaffery this year, though, losing Nunge and CJ never being able to get his health completely back really hurt this team. They had enough parts without them, though. Bad in-game personnel decisions caused that 4 out if 5 losing snap in the B10 and it cost Iowa again today. He just doesn't have a feel for in-game flow, it seems.

Iowa basketball from 1993 forward might look much, much different if Street hadn’t died. Iowa was looking really good in that 1993 season before he died and they had some recruiting momentum. Kenyon Murray was a freshman and had been a McDonald’s all-American. The next year, they brought in Chris Kingsbury, who was also McD AA. Iowa hoops had some momentum and really could have made some noise in that 1993 NCAA tournament with one more big. I’ve also heard it said many times over the years from former players that Davis never got his full intensity back after Street.

We’ll never know, but I’d love to peer into an alternate universe somewhere to see what could have been.

I will never, ever understand the Dr. Tom nostalgia. We were absolute trash on defense then just like we are now and the results are very similar. I liked Dr. Tom but he is no better or worse than Fran as a coach and one could make a great argument that Fran has had more success at Iowa with his recruits than Dr. Tom had at Iowa with just his recruits.

One doesn't have to be 100% a certain when when it comes to a coach. Yes, Dr. Tom came nowhere near to early success after Roy, BJ and Eddie left. And Gamble and Lohaus, etc. Yes, Dr. Tom recruited some good players, but never as many at one time as he had when he got here.

To the good Dr's credit, with Street and Acie Earl Iowa was actually a pretty good defensive team before Street tragically died. Earl was a great shot-blocker and Street was a 6-9 guy who could move, block shots and rebound. The following 2 years after Street's death Iowa didn't make the tournament. In 93-94, freshman Settles and James Winters were a nice combination until Winters got hurt. Settles, Street and Winters would have been a very nice frontline.

This game was a Tom Davis special. Jesus Christ, he literally would get Iowa too the second round and get embarrassed. He lost 11 games with the 7 NBA players that he inherited. Tom Davis sucked balls just like Fran.
