Besides for the final defensive stand this game was ours, I only wish when Wadley scored on that final TD the clock would have been expired... other than that, hats off to the Hawkeyes and how they played... I was and am very impressed with this team and they will bounce back in a big way.. all games besides and that’s a maybe (OSU) are winnable.. even the OSU game is as if Iowa plays like they did tonight they could run the table after this heartbreaker

We were outclassed tonight and the better team eventually won. We had no business being in this game if you look at the stats, but our D played with extreme cajones in tight spots for 40 minutes. Classic bend-don't-break. Only broke twice in 40 minutes of PSU possession. And we had a chance with less than 2 minutes. All of our guys have a lot to work on. But I don't think this teams folds after a heart-breaker. IDK if y'all have noticed, but the Big Ten West has stepped its shit up a bit. 8 wins wouldn't be a "bad" year. I think this team is better than 8 wins.

I don't intend this as criticism toward you because I've seen plenty of people say Iowa was playing bend-don't-break, but I don't think so. Hell, the number of tackles Barkley broke and guys he juked? Iowa seemed to be playing nickel a lot, but I don't think they were playing soft (off the ball, not attacking the line). I saw some blitzes tonight, including one on the third-and-goal play that resulted in a tipped ball incompletion right before the last play. Iowa mixed up their looks throughout the game so it's probably not fair to say they played bend-but-don't-break. It just looked like it because Barkley was getting 10 yards every time he touched the ball! Any other college RB and Iowa wins the game. Even against Barkley, they almost won. Other than Barkley, though, Iowa didn't look outclassed to me.

Agree with OP. If this team plays to its max potential and Stanley grows as a QB Iowa will be in the BTCG. Run the table and we'll still be in the CFP. No room for error anymore.

I was there and I saw almost zero nickel. I'm not sure if I saw any nickel. We played our 3 senior LBs on almost every defensive down. Bowers and Niemann both played a lot of slot coverage tonight. We rotated DL a lot. Barkley broke tackles and outran our LBs and secondary.

Edit: Also, an extra DB is very conducive to bend-but-don't-break. Barkley is just a beast.

Also, I should have mentioned this in my previous post, we did blitz A LOT compared to what we're used to. We weren't shy about showing it either. I wouldn't hazard a guess at the frequency, but we did blitz a lot more than I'm used to seeing from us. I don't know jack shit about coaching D. I'm wondering if that was actually more about sending another guy inside against PSU's run-pass option so that either d end could play a little more contain with less risk of gashing between the tackles. It obviously didn't work the way we wanted it to, but I'm actually (hours later) more impressed with the defensive scheme employed. We gave up almost 600 yards (I know), but PSU's big plays were almost all #26 beating our guys. It wasn't the scheme. They ran 99 plays. If only our O could have kept the ball out of their hands a little bit better...

Yep.

Few thoughts...

a) Iowa posters need to drop the Ped State narrative. It makes us look like fools. Penn State beat us. In agonizing fashion. It HURTS. But the Ped State line does nothing to advance what we think about this Iowa football team and this game.

Sure, PSU posters need to grow a thicker skin about why they get the crap slung at them...but at some point, it really is a case of "time to move on" as far as it being a reaction to the game.

Both fan bases just plain need to let it go. Of course, never forgetting nor forgiving what happened goes both ways here...but my advise is to simply move on.

b) Iowa posters also need to drop the classless PSU narrative. You want them to eat shit? Well then, Iowa needs to win the game.

c) I don't think Iowa was in any fashion outclassed or any of that horsehockey. It took quite possibly the best game of any opposing player in Kinnick history for PSU to beat Iowa last night.

d) Don't second and third guess all the twists and turns of last night's game. It's a fool's errand. No moral victory here, but for me there's only one thing I'd change about last night's game, and that's the last play's outcome and wishing Hooker had about 2 more inches of verticle.

Our Hawks played their asses off last night, and I believe this is going to wind up being a damn good football team this year as a result. That is to be congratulated no matter the final outcome.

Great, great game...but I'm moving on to kicking the crap out of Sparty.

I remember feeling the same way walking out of the BTCG two years ago.

Tough pill to swallow but it is pretty cool to know when your team literally leaves everything on the field. Tough to be mad. PSU wanted to win too.
That is exactly how I felt.

Sorry, only miserable, complaining a-holes are allowed to start threads today. You must not have gotten the memo.

If we have to go into moral victory territory... I was blown away by the participation of the student section last night. They packed it in and they were as into it as I've seen. People have bitched before about the participation of the students. I was there for every game for 5 years (I'm not that bright) as a student. 2007-2011 football seasons. These guys brought it last night. Whole crowd was obviously stunned by PSU's winner. A quick booing when McSorley punted the ball after the knee on the PAT (officials should have just called it after the TD). The rest of the stadium was emptying when the Hawks headed for the tunnel and the students were all still there by the tunnel. "Let's Go Hawks! Let's Go Hawks!" Those of us emptying out took a cue from the students and joined in for a moment.

Agreed. VERY PROUD of everyone of those guys. They played their guys out. I hope we win out and play them again in INDY. Nothing to be ashamed of fellas and the coaches can sell last night to the recruits. Get back on the horse fellas we are proud of you.

I am damn proud of our team last night. We have gotten spoiled by the last three Kinnick night top five wins, and this one was up for grabs until the last play. It took a superman effort by Barkley for them to get out of Kinnick unbeaten, and I am sure they do not want to see Iowa standing across from them in Indy. Go Hawks

Well, on TV, it was evident that they had Bower out in certain obvious passing situations--usually on long passing downs (which admittedly didn't occur a lot), but he was out on a number of plays on the last drive and the DL was exclusively the pass rush DL rotation with Hesse inside and Epenesa outside. Maybe Bower was still on the field off camera, but that seems odd since they always show the line of scrimmage area into the LB area on TV. But you were there so maybe you saw some things I didn't.

In general, I don't disagree with you. However, when the PSU fan comes to this website just to act like a complete douchenozzle, well, he gets what he deserves.

One of the articles said Iowa was in nickel on 7 of 12 plays on the final drive. Bower leaves in the nickel look.

That's what they want though. They get people riled up and start throwing out the stupid insults and then they can play victim. It is a never-ending cycle unless you just ignore them and don't respond.

Agree across the board minus Iowa being outclassed. We were definitely outclassed by one man and one man only - Barkley. That dude is legit and is going to outclass most everyone he plays this year and there is no shame in that. Very proud of the way the Hawks played!

Eh, I don't really get worked up over it.
