I want to hate Star Wars (even though I like it)

The original Jurassic Park movie is so much better than any installment of Star Wars. It's an actual attempt at a blockbuster science fiction film versus an adaptation of the hero's journey. Don't care about the box office, Star Wars is average apart from the nostalgia. I don't like that fake nerds are now cool for thinking that Star Wars is some kind of revolution when they haven't read any science fiction. Not that I've read all the good science fiction, but Star Wars sucks in comparison.

The original Star Wars (1977) made Jurassic Park possible. There was nothing like Star Wars prior to its release . George Lucas and his Skywalker Studio became the gold standard for high tech movie FX for a long time. I agree the underlying story is a bit boring and underwhelming. All the follow on movies for Star Wars were always being compared to a movie that broke the mold for science fiction and space movies. It's just that the technology evolves so quickly that the Original SW looks less than pedestrian almost 40 yrs later.

Star Wars was NEVER science fiction. I guess that was the point of my little dealio there. Of course the effects blew people away at the time. And I'm not even a sci-fi buff. I'm just sick of the popularity of Star Wars. And I wouldn't have been if it wasn't now cool to pretend to enjoy nerdy things. All people who think they like science fiction because they like Star Wars should do two things: 1. Read Hemingway. 2. Read science fiction

Methinks you are a sci-fi nerd trying to snob the "poser" sci-fi nerds.

What helped the original Star Wars trilogy were the actors:
Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Alec Guiness, Carrie Fisher.
People really enjoyed them as real people in a film about
space fantasy.

This is true. The opening scene when the camera is eclipsed by the extremely large spaceship passing by was incredible. Nothing had ever had such a level of detail before. I probably saw that movie half a dozen times that summer.

I liked it once, hate it now. Reasons?

--George Lucas edits to the originals. Darth Vader shrieking "Nooooo!" in ROTJ turned one of the greatest cinematic scenes of all time into B-movie schlock.

--Too many continuity errors between the prequels and the originals.

--Hayden Christensen. That is all.

I'm still hopeful that JJ Abrams can save the franchise. If it was Lucas directing, I wouldn't even bother to watch.

I'm opposite of OP. I want to like it even though I don't. I didn't get to see the movies when the came out because my family just didn't go to the movies. When I finally saw them years later it was a let down. Maybe if I saw them during the hype I would like them more.

It sucks that dork culture has taken such deep root. Avengers was so well-reviewed I ventured out to see it and all I got was like two laughs, aliens on hover boards, and Jeremy Renner's dumb ass shooting arrows. That movie was shit.

I live in the autism spectrum paradise that is Seattle and it's full of rich ****ing dork-ass retards. These speds really do need to be marginalized and that's why the anti-bullying campaigns really make me sad.

And Star Wars is pure fantasy. Goddamned dorks.

Hopefully Abrahms can redeem the horrible mess that Lucas has made. The previews look promising but so did the Phamtom Menace previews...

Lucas also f'ed up the Indiana series with the crystal skull.
This should not be forgotten. That skull movie was a bigger piece of flaming shit than the latest superhero movie. I don't even remember the story (except for the inclusion of aliens, because Spielberg has to shoehorn aliens into every schlocky thing he does), just the scene where LeDouche is fencing on the jeep and indy and the broad are looking back giving him tips. People who think that kind of shit is funny probably also collect Thomas Kinkade paintings.
