Mackey is a great atmosphere. The Iowa program could learn from them about the game day experience.

This team is really strong mentally. They never seemed flustered during the first half, and watching Uthoff do that to them on Rick Mount Day was fantastic.

Amazing how quickly Baer has become a vital cog in this machine. His blocked shot in the second half was brilliant.

Listening to that crowd die was a nice day after yesterday.

Regardless of a great game day atmosphere, the tougher more aggressive team wins, so all those whining about Carver's atmosphere, can go suck an egg. :)

With these 2 wins against Meechigan State and Purdont, Carver Hawkeye Arena will be
ROCKING the rest of the season.

You can make book on that one.

compared to Mackey...yes. as far as noise containment...this is the case when you have an open upper corridor like Carver compared to Mackey's ..a closed outside corridor.

I don't think it takes much engineering to put a glass wall around top to reflect noise back. Free tickets to students for noise generation. Maybe some metal flooring like the old field house.

Lots of things Barta could do. Since the B-ball team is a money maker and Iowa sports flush with cash, they outa invest in making Carver a better home environment

I agree...but probably wont happen.

I would like to see them ring it with tinted glass at the top so you could see through but not well enough to watch the game. Put metal bench seating in the student section as they stand anyway. Raise ticket prices $2.00 but let the students in for free. Upgrade the scoreboard and sound systems.

I think there are a lot of things you could do to improve Carver as you all mentioned. It would be nice to have one of those electronic ribbons that encircles the seating area that flashes stats, scores, etc. I have always wondered if they could add box seats or decks that go around the upper sections. It may reduce seating some but enclose the seating area further trapping the noise.

I will say it can get loud when there's a buzz to the game or opponent and there is not a bad seat in the house. I do enjoy watching games there regardless.

I always wondered why there is such a huge gap between the baskets and the seats at CHA? Somebody said they would need to dig out the floor a bit to squeeze seats in there. Does anybody know if that is true? Also, the scoreboard ribbons would be cool too.

The biggest thing is you enter Mackey in the middle as opposed to the top off CHA.

Great venue and our team is tough as nails mentally. Wow.

Carver was and still is a disaster as a basketball venue. It was designed for wrestling. They just let the B-ball teams use it. The "scoreboards" are an embarrassment. Ringing the corridor with glass is a great idea to bounce all that sound back into the arena. Iowa definitely needs some serious redesign of Carver...although it would be nice to implode it and start over.

I'm sorry but this just isn't true. At court level the arena is loud as hell and always has been. It is anything but a disaster. Needs improvements possibly but it is darn nice facility.

So not true. Iowa bball was coming off some great years with a final 4 and wrestling was still in the early years of gable when it was built.

I wonder if a flat electronic ribbon displaying stats and scores like you describe could be suspended from the ceiling. That would reflect some sound, give more of a 'pit' feeling on the floor, and not be an expensive structural renovation.

I just wish they could do something about the first 15 rows or so to get more fans closer to the floor with much fewer aisles. It looks horrible on tv.

That and screw it and let the kids have one side and one end for like the first 15-20 rows. It needs to be a hostile environment

Carver might be rockin, but not with 5 minutes left in a game--then it will be a mad dash for the exits--even when it's a close game. Even the Florida State game that went to OT, people still left before the game even got to OT. I understand, people can do what they want, they buy the tickets, it's just a lot that leave at the 5 minute mark or right around that time.

It's not a lot and they watch the end from up top. You'd probably explode if you saw the number of people in the Kinnock corridors.

I heard that some of the students were looking at their phone WHILE THE GAME WAS GOING ON!!!!!!!!

Where did you ever get the idea that Carver was built for wrestling? That is ridiculous considering that MBB is a revenue sport.

I get so tired of the whining about the atmosphere at Carver. In the past it has been very loud. The seating is not bad.

I would like to see better scoreboards and the like, but who in the hell attends a game for the scoreboards and the music choices? There is a freaking GAME on! Put your butts in a seat and start cheering, then the atmosphere will be just fine.

The schedule does make for lower ticket sales somewhat, but honestly all the excuses and finger-pointing need to stop. The fans are the ones who can electrify the building, and if they care enough, they WILL show up.

Lets put it this way...if both Mackey & Carver were full...and everyone yelled at once...the noise level winner would be Mackey...its just the building makeup...doesn't mean Carver cannot get loud in the lower bowl.

It's the multi-purpose aspect of CHA. The seats can be moved back to accommodate wrestling tournaments and other events on the arena floor. Agree that some further renovations with boxes up above and more premium seats down near the court could enhance the experience. But all of that could impact the multi-purpose functionality.

I would quess most of the people who complain about Carver the most/loudest don't go to the games.

I have a sound meter on my iPhone, I will measure the loudness tonight. Of couse it won't be from center court.

Two of the toughest arenas we play in, Hilton and Mackey, have the students sitting in the end zones. The difference is they show up and make noise.

I think the scoreboard/video is the biggest problem (after lack of students). I am not sure the scoreboards have been significantly updated since CHA opened. They don't give scores of other games, only have limited individual stats. Always kills me that at breaks they will show our FG% or number of rebounds, but NEVER show the other team's. Without some context our numbers are meaningless.
The video screens, which were added later, are like those at Kinnick--primarily used for advertising. They might show some game highlights at time-outs, but rarely right after a big play happens.
It has been debated here, and someone convinced me that the ceiling could support a center court scoreboard/video screen/overall entertainment center (and that it wouldn't screw up sight-lines).
Installing one of those babies would at least get us into the 21st century.

It has been a long time, but the atmosphere of the smaller old Fieldhouse seemed much louder than Carver Hawkeye. Still, I thought Carver was a very nice, maybe too comfortable, arena.

I do think they should get the students nearer the floor, and figure out a way to get them excited about coming to games. Updating the music and scoreboards, and lowering student ticket prices would be a good start. Alumni could make up the difference in ticket revenue. I am sure that some relatively minor renovations, like closing in the areas in the back of the arena, could make the noise level greater, but mostly that needs to come from the fans (especially the students) being ready to make some noise for the Hawks.

What was the intro like at Mackey? I though last years was pretty good, but this year it sounds like we pirated some music off Lion King followed by guys holding out their jerseys.

Would be nice if we could develop some identify for Carver, but don't think we have that much juice. Maybe Applebee's can arrange to have Franwiches drop from the ceiling when we make 3 pointers?

Agree the scoreboard and sound system need to be brought into the 21st century.

Take the last 10 rows out, build suites around the top and close it in.

this, and build a ribbon around like they did in kinnick and install a center court scoreboard like Wells Fargo. suite seats in Carver would be awesome and sell out instantly. I've heard the rumored design flaws that won't allow a hanging scoreboard but I'm sure there's a workaround. I also don't think we can do anything about the many rows at the bottom due to basic geometry and complex fire code.

that said, I think carver is awesome and fans bitch too much.

The field house had a dirt floor with the court sitting on top of the dirt floor.

Yes, but the metal seating was old football stands.

I've changed my mind over the years. I used to be a staunch, "Field House was awesome" guy. As I get older I realize it was the time of my life, seriously. Came to love Hawkeye ball there and attended games as a student.

Nothing could have been built to replace that.

Therefore, I urge that before we rebuild Carver, somebody rebuild me! Then I will get behind making.................eeeeeeeerck, too late..........

..wait, no, I feel better...what was I saying?

Carver is great for watching games. Just don't like how it looks on tv. Too many aisles.

Oh, and empty seats look bad.
