I was told Iowa wouldn’t miss Cook at the 4

The main place we will miss him is rebounding.

This team looks to be poor in that area.

Even though his effort was generally pathetic his athleticism alone made it hard not to get rebounds. When he would actually bother to jump and not just stand flat footed.

How do you like our options now, boyz?

I have resisted posting this, but agree 100%. He was selfish, turnover prone and not a team guy. Well, we had 19 turnovers without him and could have used someone who created a match up problem for DePaul. Garza played his ass off, but fell prey to the same poor decisions that Cook did at times by trying go 1 on 3 and spin into double teams. It's a tough balance to strike because whether it is Cook last year or Garza this year, I respect that they want to make plays. Last night it looked like DePaul had 7 defenders and we were playing with 3.

Garza did his best Cook impression last night only Cook would have gotten some buckets too.

That's a lack of teaching IMO. Pass out of double teams. Be patient.

It's that simple. Trying to attack double teams on the block doesn't work. That's what they want you to do.

Pass out for 3s.

Even Shaq became a great passer against double teams.

Garza has always been a black hole. I doubt that will ever change.

Starts at the Point, and Conner is not one...at least a starter in this league. And his brother needs to put on about 50 lbs in order to play at this level. A 50% Bohannon is better than 100% Conner. A Point Guard needs to be quick and play defense too....enough said.

And yes if Cook plays like the Cook for the first half of last season, then it would have made a big difference to have him out there to combat DePaul's big advantage athletically. If he was the Cook of the latter part, then no it would not have made any difference. I have no idea if DePaul can shoot like that normally...but they just could not miss....some pressure probable takes them out of that...but did not happen.

I don't like Connor at the point, but a 50% Bohannon is painful to watch. PAINFUL. Shut him down.

7' of suck is pretty bad. Quite possibly the most over-hyped player during Fran's tenure. Built like Tarzan, plays like Jane on her period.

I can't stand watching guys that big play like pussies.

Seriously, JBO is out there seeking out more contact than Nunge.

Frans judgment regarding him is extremely bizarre. Why in the holy hell is he starting, let alone starting two years ago?

7' of puss is hard to watch. Honestly, how hard is it to put him on the block, feed him entry passes and have him take it to the basket? Maybe a jump hook? Anything?

The fact that Fran is already red-faced and screaming into his hands is a bad, bad sign. It could be a very long season.

Nunge wants no part of sitting down in the post and grinding it out down there

My favorite part of last nights game is something that has happened to players throughout Fran's tenure. On the first possession 2 got the ball at the top of the key, no one on him, he looked confused by it, hesitated, dribbled like he had never dribbled a basketball before to the free throw line and then could decide if he should shot a pull up jumper or a floater. It's like he had never played basketball before.
What do they practice? Just shooting stand still 3's?

I liked Cook, but he would have needed to score 47 points last night to help that train wreck!

In fairness to Tyler, it was stated by a few on this board that Zion Williamson would not be good in college either. “This board” has a tendency to tear everyone apart. Reading one viewpoint on a message board from vocal minority shouldn’t project onto Iowa fans as a whole. Not to mention it’s easy to come on here a vent, whether it’s really your true feelings. The funny thing is if Tyler Cook was transferring in this year from another school the same people would be off their rocker excited about it.

And in fairness to this Hawkeye team, we had several games that played out like this one with Tyler Cook playing.

Hawk fans have a tradition of saying we will be better after high level starters leave.

Remember how much better we were going to be when the 4 kids left for the NFL? When Woodbury and Mike left we were going to get so much better. People can’t wait for Stanley to go, but wait until mid season next year and we’ll be crying for the good old days.

I’ve never been a fan of Cook because I felt he didn’t always give good effort. Like everyone on this site I admired his athletic talent.

We will no doubt realize how valuable J Bo is if he can’t go full out this year. Knock his D if it makes you feel good, but he’s our heart and soul.

We all probably need to appreciate the skills of our team, especially the studs, instead of harping on their weaknesses. They may not measure up to M. Jordan, but if they give major effort let’s get behind them.

you realize that Connor is supposed to be our backup pg right?

I seem to recall some people even saying that we'd be BETTER without him.

LOL.

Yep. Cook was all about getting to th

So who on this board doesn't think Connor shouldn't still be the back up? Touissant isn't going to get better sitting / playing with the second unit. He needs maximum PT in these early games to play through some of the rough spots for there to be a chance in hell Fran trusts the kid when we get to Vegas and that brutal 5-game stretch. Nothing but respect for Bohannon, but he creates more value off the ball as a shooter than at PG. From a pure PG perspective, Connor and JBo have the same limitations.

Since you seem to have some insight into these things, why didn't Fran offer the Brauns kid from West? Kid has a nice frame, hops and a good post game. Hard for me to believe Fran wasn't interested in that kid. Seemed like he would be an excellent successor to Kriener.

Braun committed in the summer...didn't want to let the recruiting season play out.

Thanks. It seemed odd that Fran wasn't in on this kid. I don't know, just asking, but I saw the kid play a few times and liked his game. Seemed to make sense that Iowa would pursue the kid, but maybe he was looking for something else or Fran thought he was going to land _______ player.
