IA HS Wrestler Passes Away

I was shocked. So gutted for his family and wish them strength through this. What on Earth happened?

Austin Roberts was a good wrestler and more importantly a GREAT person. Prayers and condolences to the Roberts family and the Spencer Tiger community and wrestling family.

Well stated Kdezeeuw. The Sioux City Journal just did an "AWESOME" feature story a week ago on Austin Roberts. It's worth the read. Many times, we all take life for granted. I would hope that all posters on this board would take a moment to THANK the GOOD LORD for what they have during the holidays and KEEP THE ROBERT'S FAMILY IN YOUR PRAYERS. STAY TIGER STRONG!!!!!!!

I'm from Spencer originally, and I talked to some people who were headed to the Spencer Invitational yesterday as they were going in the door in the morning. I had met this young man only once recently, when we were at a local private complex in Spencer with a pool and a hot tub and he let us in when the "password code" (push button thing on the wall to get the door open) wasn't working properly (maybe operator error on my part! Ha!). There was a group of 4-5 Spencer wrestlers in there with him. Seemed like a really nice young man, all of them for that matter. Shot the breeze with them a little bit.

One of my good friends from the area is one of the 2 announcers for the TV tapings and what not, and I know one of the co-Head Coaches and his family pretty well, so I'll have to reach out and see what they know. I presume an autopsy will be performed and that will be the most telling other than all of us speculating, but I suspect in cases like this they just have a heart condition of some kind that nobody really knew about. From the 2nd hand information I have so far, he didn't get slammed or anything like that, he was wrestling in the 3rd period of the Finals and then grabbed his rib area and they stopped the match. He apparently forfeited at that point and shook the other kids hand as he was still on the mat. From there it obviously didn't improve any for the young man.

They had a youth tournament today in Spencer at the same location that was canceled. My condolences to this young mans family and friends. Absolute damn shame.

This sums up Austin's way of life in an excellent manner, especially the coaches comments at the end.

RIP Austin. You will be greatly missed by the wrestling family and especially us in NW Iowa.

Almost 28k now after the goal was set at 10k... Just an outstanding display of kindness and generosity from our great wrestling community! Once again, makes me proud to be an Iowan!

With my Wife being an ATC for a local high school, I sit matside with her often when covering tournaments. She is following this story to see what happened. This is definitely a horrible situation for all involved, teammates, coaches, fans, medical responders. No one expects this to happen to an 18 year old kid. We can all look back to the kid from Creston that had to be shocked on the mat last year during the State Dual tournament.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and Spencer community.

$32k now. Nice to see the different wrestling teams/clubs around the state and beyond pitching in. Spencer is a great community as is the wrestling community so I'm not shocked.

Heard from a guy I know in that area today that the preliminary findings point to natural causes but that they don't have the full results. Very tragic situation. Prayers to the family, team, town and anyone who knew this young man.

AWESOME wrestling family. Keep reaching HIGHER!!!!

Alright wrestling community...aka the greatest family. I know there are coaches that both post and lurk here. Coaches of youth, high school, and college teams. Here is a challenge for you to show support to the Roberts family and Spencer Tiger wrestling team. I took this from Facebook. Let's load up this email with purple and gold pics in support.

Here is the FB post:
WRESTLING TEAMS AND FANS. WIth the amazing idea from the LeMars Wrestling Club/High School, I have decided to see how we can make this even bigger. They did a Purple, Gold, and White night at their practice tonight in a moment of solidarity to Austin Roberts and the SHS Community and took a team picture. With everyones help I would love to see if some more teams, either HS or Youth, or even College if the word spread far enough that would be willing to do the same and then send it to me, and I will make a large blanket/throw with each picture we receive on it. We will then donate them to the Roberts family and to the school to hang in appreciation of this gesture from the Wrestling Brotherhood. Please tag someone you may know who knows more wrestling people, coaches, leaders or organizations who would participate. Also, for those of you twitter people, I would like to have the following maybe retweeted as well to get some more help as I don't have it yet. " Wrestling teams willing to help, take a team picture in Purple Gold N White and send it to bgroen88@hotmail.com to show support to the Austin Roberts Family and the SHS community. #arbeastmode " Purple N Gold For Austin Roberts

Any way we could get the Hawks to participate in this too?

I pray for this kids family. What a tragedy, but it's great to see the wrestling community help as much as they can.

kid had a health issue that could have taken his life at any moment. Brushing teeth, walking to class, etc. It so happened it flared up during wrestling. Wrestling certainly did not help the dissection of his aorta (sp?), but timing is mind boggling. To be fair, I came upon this info, 2nd hand....like a colleague of a treating physician. Could be lying to me, but take it for what its worth. Marfan Syndrome.
