Looks like it is Iowa Central at 9 followed by Cornell at 10:30.

This event is a huge waste of time. How they are unable to attract 1-2 decent opponents to this, I do not know. I thought the worm was turning with Maryland last year but this year it has gotten even weaker. It is bizarre that D2 and NAIA schools are somehow able to put on quality events but Iowa struggles.

As I understand it, the point of the Iowa Duals IS to bring small Iowa schools to CHA. I'd love it if UNI would join the party, but I don't know exactly what roadblocks are keeping UNI and Iowa from scheduling a dual.

They have talked in the past about improving the level of competition so I do not think that is the point of the IC Duals.

I think the problem with getting uni on the schedule is that tom brands doesn't wanna go to cedar falls, he wants them to come to CHA all the time. not sure if that's the real reason or not but thought I heard that from somewhere. The reason they go out to like Montana and wrestle is for more exposure. But I did hear that Schwab wants to get iowa back on the schedule.

I have no issues with bringing in smaller schools and letting them wrestle in CHA, as it serves the dual purpose of a pre-season warm up. What upsets me is moving it from Thanksgiving weekend to the week before, which they did a few years back. How many fans can get off work on the Friday before Thanksgiving to watch this? Having it on black Friday, when most people are off work seemed to make more sense, plus I usually come back to IC that weekend and was able to attend....how did TNT not know that????

How many fans can take off work at all for wrestling? They are going to have a meet at 9 and another meet at 10:30 on a Friday morning. That's it. Completely odd.

This event has little or no fan appeal without 1-2 legit D-1 teams and walking all over substandard teams doesn't help the team much--especially when they continue to go to the Luther Open which is another cakewalk event. This takes up a precious competition date. Beef it up or stop having it.

I mean, they could do it on Black Friday every other year, otherwise they're competing with the Heroes Game over in Kinnick

Why don't you call the wrestling office and suggest it instead of bitching to people who cant change it.

This seems to be your stock response to pretty much everything. If the above is your stance, why do you think message boards exist and why are you on them?

And never mind that I'm citing people in the wrestling program as part of my point. But I digress.

I actually think Iowa having a "prep" meet as their first dual is a good idea. The benefits definitely outweigh the negatives. First and foremost, you get the teams confidence levels up (even if it is against subpar competition), but that can do wonders especially for unproven guys, or guys new to the starting lineup. Additionally, like Neo_Hawk said, it gives smaller schools an opportunity to wrestling at CHA which is a dream of anyone from Iowa who has ever stepped foot on a wrestling mat. Lastly, its not like Iowa isn't going to see tough competition the rest of the year, so why not start things out light and turn it on as the year progresses?

I do not see the gain for Iowa to do that.

That said, if I decide to buy the other points which I might, then they shouldn't be at the Luther Open pillow fight as well.

Best case, get another reasonable team for the Iowa City Duals. UNI would be perfect but it isn't that easy.

I've always kind of envisioned the Luther Open as an elongated wrestle off for Iowa as the majority of them meet in the finals regardless. That being said, this is the same gripe a lot of fans have with Iowa's football team and their notorious scheduling of a MAC team first game. I see both sides to it; on one side it seems kind of pointless, but on the other side it allows you to start off on a good note. I don't disagree that a UNI/Iowa meet would be more entertaining, or perhaps more worth while for the wrestlers. With that being said, however, I also see why they continuously do it. It allows wrestlers new to the line up to see the bright lights and get a taste of what it is like to wrestle at CHA. It also allows them to build up some momentum going into the season; wrestling is as much mental as it is anything at this level. I don't know about you, but I'd rather make my debut coming off a win against subpar competition then have to go up against a ranked D1 opponent right out of the gates.

There are many shades of grey between what Iowa will face next Friday and a high quality D1 team. Most of our guys won't even break a sweat.

Also, Iowa lead off with Okie State last year and I don't think it had a negative effect on the season.

I just do not see the point of two Friday morning duals against non-D1 opponents. It's an awkward, poor event all around.

The staff and wrestling office is well aware of the fans gripes with this event... They just don't care. It is what it is.
That's kind of how I view it as well. They have the power to change it, but if they're not going to, then they're comfortable with the way they approach it. From a Fan perspective we all want to see quality competition right off the bat (Wrestling, Football, Basketball, etc.). The practice portion is the same for everybody, so let's get it on!

Coaches can be strange creatures, they aren't Fans. They're preparing for what they believe is the correct way for the long haul of a long season. They have their reasons, and they didn't ask for my input, nor will I ask for theirs in my profession. So as stated, it is what it is.

The hand wringing and the teeth gnashing of the participants in the Iowa City Duals doesn't keep me up at night, that much I can tell you with 100% clarity.

If true it doesn't make me feel much better.
I hear they have something called "safe places", and you can probably pick up a Therapy Cat or Therapy Squirrel or whatever the hell they're using on your way there, if that will help you to feel better.

I'm here to help Spooner, and I didn't even stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

You're welcome.
