Idc if I get heat, Freeman is the poster child of what’s wrong with college sports now

College sports are still awesome. The players now have power like they should have had a long time ago. Players have been quitting and prioritizing their own interests for a long time, this is no different.
Really, and players quitting on their teams mid season because they have handlers throwing visions of million $ paydays dancing in their heads? Bull shit. The inmates are now running the asylum. There is no way thats a good thing.....

Congress needs to step in and fix this now! ;)

If college sports are going to be pay for play, fine, but I think there needs to be some structure to it and resemble more what is done in pro sports.

Couple things I'd like to see are some sort of a salary cap system, and contracts. Whether it's 1 year, 2 years, or whatever. Some sort of commitment from the player that they are going to stick around for an agreed upon amount of time.

Right now it just feels like a total free for all, where anything goes. Take cash, shut it down mid season, then bolt.

Someone mentioned bringing back the old transfer rules.

I don't know, just some thoughts off the top of my head.
I agree. And to incentivize players to stay at one school they could give salary caps for each year they stay at one school. Get the freshman salary & increase it for every year they stay at the original school. Say $100k for fresman, $200K for sophomore, $500K for juniors & $1 million for seniors. Transfer out & the salary they receive reverts back to the original freshman/first year salary. No one likes to take a pay cut & more players would stay to receive the increases.

That's exactly what happened too. You knew he was transferring a week or two before his pinky problem by his attitude.

I was done with Freeman vs Nebraska at home. When he threw the ball off of Pryce’s head and then laughed about it. Then got sat on the bench and continued to laugh and smile while being down double digits……. GTFO

He’s got talent, no question, but he’s got other issues winning teams don’t need around. I don’t wish ill on him by any means. Good luck to Owen where ever he lands.

Gets the cash offer and decides his pinky hurts and that’s the good reason to quit on the team.

Spare me the excuses of why that’s not true. ****ing Payton Sandfort played with everything broken. Dude is basically the last of old school mentality in the weak new age of college athletics. I wasn’t always a fan of his hero ball but he will ALWAYS BE A HAWK. Unlike some others.

College sports are disgusting now. Fits perfectly with this what can you do for me right now ADHD tik tok generation.
I liked your post but….

Can’t really blame Freeman. If somebody is offering him 7 figures, he’s got to take it.

I would.

OP is spot on . It is a generational thing. Entitlement is out of control
This generation needs a full on hot War where they see the World is hard and have an appreciation for the generations that came before that gave them a Country to live in where they could grow up to be entitled self centered greedy soft miserable little pricks without any real repurcussions raised by the 1st generation of Parents who never gave them the belt to teach any boundaries, loyalty or respect.

this is totally different. paying kids right out of high school. then these kids leave for the highest bidder. no one ever forced any of these kids to attend college, get an education, and play the game they supposedly love. it takes a team…no one should get more than the others

The team played their best basketball this season without Owen.

Seemed like him quitting galvanized the rest of the team
Thanks for calling it correctly- He quit. He could have come back, he chose not to. BFD that he could do so, that it’s his right to chase the money. I get that. So stipulated. One can dress it up however one wants. But the final word - he quit on the team.

And you will need a CBA to do this.

You mean collective bargaining agreement and unionized players? Yes, I think that is the case without legislation to enable NCAA to make up rules that restrict a players's ability to move to different "jobs" or limit salaries.

Back to Freeman, the big question I have is how much was he paid at Iowa? With $1.5 million payroll, I would think he was getting $600K or so. IF he shut it down after cashing the last check, then yes, seems a little bit un-christian to not try your hardest for your pay and your teammates.

Men’s game is unwatchable to me after the cc era and addition to wbb. First to go was NBA and have not watched a game in years- not the same as Jorden/bird era- traveling , carrying, no calls

The NBA just seems so different now. Back then you had the hate/respect rivalries of the Detroit Bad boys/Bulls and the Jordan rules, and the Lakers/Celtics with the whole Magic and Kareem vs Larry and the Chief. You had the Sixers of Dr. J and the Mailman and Stockton Jazz. Now it seems more about everybody manipulating to get the best players on one team, and signn the next 100million $ contract. I know the players made big money back then, but it never seemed to be about WHY they were playing. I think MJ would have played Larry or Magic one on one just for the gamesmenship of it. Back then you had MJ, and Dominique, and Vince doing dunk competitons at the all star game, because they wanted to be the show, and now you have a dude who's a G league player winning the thing. I can't believe those guys would have been down with relinguishing the high flyer crown like that.

IMO, this will moderate, given time. The blowback will make it less volatile. It’s got to stabilize.
Don’t think so. Super fans (boosters) unless something changes will always think they’re a player or 2 away from a title. While of course our fans will all call Freeman a POS for leaving this was a pretty miserable season and situation this year. And the money he’s going to get is life changing. 🤷‍♂️

Couldn't agree more. I don't see how iowa mens bb is ever relevant again under the current landscape. Freeman isn't even a stud and we can't afford him.
He wouldn’t be leaving if the program was in a better place. And by that I mean as a whole program from the top down plus NIL. And once a coach leaves that brings in said player more than likely everyone leaves. It happens almost everywhere.

I don't blame Freeman one bit. If I was him, I would do the same thing. We are talking about an enormous amount of money here. It is just too hard to turn it down. I don't like what NIL has done; but, I would get the big payday if I could.
Need to stop calling it NIL. It is pay for play. When have you seen Freeman's name, image and likeness used for advertising?

I can't blame him for looking at the financial end of it. But I'd disagree with a player "pulling up a chair" mid season and saying I'm done here, which appears exactly what happened by all the smoke. While Sandfort played through numerous injuries all season and did his best, Freeman decided mid season to move on for his own self interest. Sorry, but I do believe he could have played, and I'd like to see players at least honor some part of their commitment even if its just for one freakin year..

And, that is the current state of the game. There’s a bit of spoiling with these kids. Too much appeasement. You checked out the situation. You chose that school. Commit for 2 years, minimum. Or forfeit any NIL. Something. You can’t just love a choice and then hate it 2 seconds later. Or, maybe you can.

I wish this was so. However, the courts have turned down almost every effort of trying to regulate this in some manner. The NCAA should have addressed this 15 years ago when they had the chance, but their arrogance caused them to ignore it or worse, treat it with distain. Now they get their lunch handed to them every time they turn around, to the point where they do nothing.

Unless they (whoever “they” turn out to be) are allowed to regulate it in some manner and provide some certainty to everyone, the path they are on is not sustainable for anyone.

I do not think they can put the toothpaste back in the tube, ie, paying players. So, I think it will end up with the players being treated as employees. From there, they will be allowed to unionize, which will allow schools to negotiate with the union and provide some much needed “certainty”, such as length of time in a program, pay scales, and the like. This is modern college athletics

If Iowa paid $600K to freeman this Year---seems reasonable guess if the payroll was the rumored $1.5 million, then taking the Biggest pay
on the team and quitting after the checks are in the bank---then yeah, it think it is reasonable to be upset at him for quitting on the team, not for transferring out.

The good that came out of it was the Iowa City kid Braun was able to show he had a lot more heart, put out more effort, and was a solid Big10 level player.

IDK. If he really did "quit" on the team mid season, then he can join the pariah group with CJ. C'ya.

But I really don't know. How bad was that finger?

Leaving at the end of the season is fine - I don't like it but that's how the system works now.

It wasn't hard to see this coming when NIL was approved. Players going to the highest bidder.
