If COVID Has Killed Off a Lot of Our Elderly and At-Risk Population, Why Are There Still Excess Deaths?

I know, that was a trollish way to ask the question, but I'm serious.

Excess death rates have started to decline a little, but why are there still excess deaths at all?

If we have thinned the herd and most of the rest of us have some immunity either from vaccines, catching it, or both, then what's driving these continuing above-normal death rates?

What makes you think it's over?,.. Continued thinning of the herd.

I fear that it just takes a little longer to wear down some of us...

I also wonder if the PTB in China have just decided to kill off their elderly and vulnerable to avoid or reduce some of the problems facing other powers with aging populations.

I'm surprised conspiracy types haven't suggested that's why we have COVID in the first place. Or have they?
