Or really if he were in his prime, how would he be perceived in light of his relationship with a 14 year old Priscilla Beaulieu?
We were just watching the Elvis movie and honestly that creeped me out. I can’t imagine today that a 24 year old superstar would be looked at the same if he was romancing a 14 year old girl. Was it really not a big deal back then or has history just chosen not to highlight it?

I think it all changed with the internet. Famous guys were dating much too young girls into the 90's.

We got the information in our faces now and society may have been a little more acceptable of the age back then. not sure we might have to defer to trad or goldmom

State Rep. Kay Khan said she was stunned when she first learned that Massachusetts was one of the few states with no minimum age to get married.

Indeed, the state recorded nearly 1,200 marriages involving children under 18 between 2000 and 2018, including some as young as 13, according to data from the Department of Public Health.

...

Earlier this year, when the marriage ban seemed to be going nowhere once again, Monteiro shared her frustration.

"We want to know that our legislators are there for us and hear us and actually that we live in a democracy," Monteiro said. "We want that and we want to protect the rights of our children now."

But this year, all that effort appears to have paid off.

In a surprise move, the House folded the measure into the annual state budget. And Senate negotiators agreed to include it in the combined version.

It’s weird. And he was not the only one. It was so common up until 80s. Jerry Lee Lewis marrying a 13 year old. One of The Rolling Stones was dating a 13 year old in the 80s. And what about the lyrics to some of these songs.

Can you imagine a guy’s career after coming out with this song:

I've got no inhibitions
So keep your keys out of your ignition
I steal a car like I got the curse
I can't resist the old lady's purse
Jailbait you look so good to me
Jailbait won't you set me free
Jailbait you look fine fine fine
I know I've got to have you in a matter of time
Well I don't care if you're just thirteen
You look too good to be true
I just know that you're probably clean
There's one lil' thing I got do to you
Jailbait you look so good to me
Jailbait won't you set me free
Jailbait you look fine fine fine
I know I've got to have you in a matter of time
So tell your mama that I'm back in town
She likes us boys when it's time to get down
She's got this craving for the underage
I just might be your mama's brand new rage
Jailbait you look so good to me
Jailbait won't you set me free
Jailbait you look fine fine fine
I know I got to have you in a matter of time
Honey you you you look so nice
She's young she's tender
Won't you please surrender
She's so fine she's mine
All the time, all mine mine
It's all right baby
It's quite all right I asked your mama
Wait a minute officer
Don't put those handcuffs on me
Put them on her and I'll share her with you”

Making it even crazier is girls physically matured at an older average age back then too compared to now. I’m glad things moved into a direction where that behavior is not tolerated without major legal and career consequences.

If Elvis were alive today, I suspect that his hair would still be jet black...

The marriage history of Jerry Lee Lewis

At age 16, he married Dorothy Barton, it lasted 20 months.
At age 18, he married Jane Mitchum, it lasted 4 years.
At age 22, he married Myra Brown, it lasted 12 years
At age 36, he married Liz Pate, it lasted 11 years
At age 48, he married Shawn Stephens, it lasted 77 days
At age 49, he married Kerri McCarver, it lasted 21 years

If now was then he wouldn’t even have considered it.

trying to judge historical figures by today’s standards is stupid.

goes for governments and polices also for the most part. Context and the reality of the time period are often not considered any longer.

Not very many generations ago marriage at 16 was as much the norm as the exception. My great grandparents were married at 15/16 and it wasn't seen as a big deal at all.

This is another oldie but goodie about statutory rape:

Little Queenie

I got lumps in my throat
When I saw her comin' down the aisle
I got the wiggles in my knees
When she looked at me and sweetly smiled
There she is again
Standin' over by the record machine
Looking like a model
On the cover of a magazine
She's too cute to be a minute over seventeen
Meanwhile I was thinkin'
If she's in the mood no need to break it
I got the chance and I oughta take it
If she can dance we can make it
C'mon queenie let's shake it
Go, go, go, little queenie
Go, go, go, little queenie
Go, go, go, little queenie
Tell me who's the queen
Standin' over by the record machine
Looking like a model
On the cover of a magazine
She's too cute to be a minute over seventeen
Meanwhile, I was still thinkin'
If it's a slow song, we'll omit it
If it's a rocker, then we'll get it
And if it's good, she'll admit it
C'mon queenie, let's get with it
Go, go, go, little queenie
Go, go, go, little queenie
Go, go, go, little queenie

then you had...

Well, she was just seventeen
You know what I mean
And the way she looked was way beyond compare
So how could I dance with another (Ooh)
When I saw her standing there

Well she looked at me, and I, I could see
That before too long I'd fall in love with her
She wouldn't dance with another (Whooh)
When I saw her standing there

Well, my heart went "boom"
When I crossed that room
And I held her hand in mine

Whoah, we danced through the night
And we held each other tight
And before too long I fell in love with her
Now I'll never dance with another (Whooh)
When I saw her standing there

Well, my heart went "boom"
When I crossed that room
And I held her hand in mine

Whoah, we danced through the night
And we held each other tight
And before too long I fell in love with her
Now I'll never dance with another (Whooh)
Since I saw her standing there
Oh since I saw her standing there
Oh since I saw her standing there

then you had...

Oh since I saw her standing there
Oh since I saw her standing there
which inspired...

Yey I saw sparks fly, from the corner of my eye
When I turned, it was love at first sight
I said please excuse me, I didn't catch your name
Oh it'd be a shame not to see you again
And just when I thought she was comin' to my door
She whispered sweet and brought me to the floor, she said
I'm only seventeen (seventeen)
But I'll show you love like you've never seen
She's only seventeen (seventeen)
Daddy says she's too young, but she's old enough for me
Come to my place, we can talk it over
Oh everything going down in your head
She said take it easy, I need some time
Time to work it out, to make you mine
And just when I thought she was comin' to my door
She whispered sweet and brought me to the floor, she said
I'm only seventeen (seventeen),
You ain't seen love, ain't seen nothing like me
She's only seventeen, seventeen yeah yea
Yes! Such a bad girl, loves to work me overtime
Feels good (ha), dancin' close to the borderline
She's a magic mountain, she's a leather glove
Oh she's my soul, it must be love
She's only seventeen (seventeen)
I used to give her love, like I've never seen
She's only seventeen (seventeen)
Daddy says she's too young, but she's old enough for me (seventeen)
She's everything I need (seventeen)
Daddy says she's too young
But she's old enough, old enough for me

and yep, Kip Winger killed the jailbait song...

Societal norms have changed a lot in the last 30-50 years. People got married, started families, started working at much younger ages. Today we treat adults as kids.

You can't look at what was acceptable in the past and apply today's standards to it. That goes with statues, art, film, music, etc, etc. In fact, I think it is one of our biggest flaws in society today, to not view things in historical context and cancel out what we don't find acceptable now.

Roman Polanski, who was convicted of having sex with a 13 year old and admitted sleeping with multiple 15 year old girls in his autobiography was given a standing ovation and the Best Director award at the 2003 Oscars. F-king disgusting and shows how messed up and hypocritical Hollywood is.

Sweet young thing ain't sweet no more
Sweet young thing ain't sweet no more
Mama found her draped over the toilet bowl

Oooh

Mama said, "child, what you done?"
Mama said, "child, what you done?"
"Wake up and greet the midday sun"

Sweet young thing ain't sweet no more
Sweet young thing ain't sweet no more
Mama's little pills spilled all over the floor

Oooh
Oooh, ow, ow, ow

Mama can't handle her on her own
Mama can't handle her on her own
She says, "You just wait till your fathe

My grandfather was 22 when he got home from Korea in 1954. He talked about how him and his friends would drive by the school and look at all the girls. That would be insanely creepy today. Imagine someone getting back home from college and cruising the school parking lot for chicks. Anywho, he met my grandma outside her HS and they married when she was 17 and he was 23. Grandpa is in prison in 2022.

Probably should have left that hobby behind, eh?
I should have worded that different. He died 5 years ago. That stunt in 2022 would land him in prison. Guessing there was some funny business between gram and gramps when she was 16 and he was 22.

My in-laws married when he was 16 and she was 15. Been married for almost 70 years.

I think they secretly hate each other.

One of my favorite JLL stories:

Nov 23, 1976: Jerry Lee Lewis Arrested at Graceland

by Best Classic Bands Staff

lewis_custody

In the early morning hours on November 22, 1976, Jerry Lee Lewis pulls up to the entrance to Elvis Presley’s Memphis home in a new Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, his latest wife by his side, and asks to see Elvis. Told by the security guard that Presley is sleeping, he says thanks and drives off. At 9:30 a.m. in the Memphis suburb of Collierville, Lewis flips the Rolls while turning a corner. A breathalyzer test barely registers. But Lewis, obviously impaired, is given tickets for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and driving without a license.

The next day at 2:30 a.m., Lewis again pulls up to the gates of Graceland. This time in a new Lincoln Continental that rams into the gates before it stops.

Lewis says of both times that Presley called him wanting to get together. On this day, November 23, 1976, Lewis says he got a call from Elvis at a nearby bar, The Vapors, telling him to come over and hang out. Unrelated to the Presley call, the bar’s owner gave Lewis a pistol but advised him to keep it on the dashboard so he wouldn’t get charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

Accounts tend to vary from the moment a rowdy Lewis arrives at Graceland. He admits to being quite drunk, and he supposedly tells the guard to let Elvis know that The Killer is here to see Elvis. The guard notices the gun and calls the police. It was also reported that Presley watched the incident go down via closed-circuit. No one in Presley’s camp ever confirmed or denied that Elvis – who was at this point in his life was rather strung out on his own combination of substances – called Lewis.

He was arrested. But most of the charges were later reduced or dropped. Especially as the bar owner who gave Lewis the gun was also a sheriff. Presley died less than a year later.

Best probably apocryphal story told of the incident: Lewis waving the gun while at the gates of Graceland, yelling, “Tell Elvis to get his ass out here so I can show him who the real King of rock ‘n’ roll is!”

This comment makes me think of a discussion I was having with someone the other day....What are we going to look back on in the future about present day "norms" and be upset about?

It wouldn't be perceived well. Looking at the 50's, there were people born in the 1800's when life expectancy was much lower than it is now so people married and procreated much younger. I just finished reading "East of Eden" and it has a very good perspective on this.
