Hard to believe but according to this site RPI would have Gonzaga at #8, Iowa at #34, and Baylor at #30. Just think that this was the primary tool for NCAA bids and seeding. I understand it's still early in the season but thank goodness this has become a relic of the past.

Correct. It was the crappiest of metrics. Didn't factor in margin of victory or loss at all. Huge boost for beating terrible teams on the road.

The RPI never benefitted Iowa. And I’m not some conspiracy theorist who always thinks Iowa gets the shaft. It was just always bizarre that we could never have an RPI number that made sense, even with our really good White and Uthoff teams. Our RPI was always lower than it felt like it should have been.
Very true. Hate to say it, but that falls on the head coach. It was no secret how to maximize your RPI, yet we never took advantage of the system. I know a lot of coaches believed in the building your team’s confidence by winning early, even against terrible competition, but that was to Iowa’s detriment year after year.

Wasn't one of the things to game the system was playing div II teams so they didn't have RPI rank and didn't hurt RPI like playing a 300 type team. Yes, garbage metric but I don't think the people working for NCAA are the brightest/best.

You mean the game that Ted Valentine and the Big Ten's officials rigged don't you?

Does anyone know how to get the historical RPI ratings? For some reason, probably associated with impatience, I cannot find them.
That’s the one. I’ll NEVER forget it. I was at a rodeo in Phoenix Arizona watching game cast on my phone.. my wife was so pissed as my in-laws has brought us to this thing as a gift but I wouldn’t stop looking at my phone. Furious...

Yes there were many things bad about the RPI that were awful at determining the "best" teams. Instead of playing 300+ RPI teams you could play at Division II team and just have it not count. Or play bad teams and win on the road and get the weighting boost from the road wins. It's why decent/good teams in a non-Power 5 league had high RPI's as they rang up road wins against bad teams.

Iowa was never good about gaming the RPI. You just plan cannot play the 300+ RPI teams when that system mattered. Those awful teams were boat anchors on the RPI.
