If you hike the ball...

He was the end man on the line of scrimmage, but he also had to report as an eligible receiver prior to the play.

he was the end man on line of scrimmage makes him eligible (TE) guys out side of him were off the ball making all three guys near ball eligible. I think I didn't watch it that close but that almost has to be the answer.
That's exactly what happened. The two guys to the center's right were off the ball. It's called a center eligible, and I don't think I've seen one in the last 30 years.

First of all - is this true? Someone posted that's not a college rule. You might be right I really have no idea

Second how does that work? Is the defense told he is reported as eligible? How are they not ready for it if that's the case?

I am 95% sure he doesn’t have to report. Guys have to report when they wear an ineligible number. 90s are eligible so no reporting required.

Sorry I disagree.

ARTICLE 3. Eligibility to Touch Legal Forward Pass

  1. Eligibility rules apply during a down when a legal forward pass is thrown.
  2. All Team B players are eligible to touch or catch a pass.
  3. When the ball is snapped, the following Team A players are eligible:
    1. Each lineman who is on the end of his scrimmage line and who is wearing a number other than 50 through 79.
He is number 97 and the last man on the line; he is eligible.

Thanks - this is great.

So how does the process of reporting as eligible work?

And why wouldn't a team just prohibit all players from wearing those numbers?

99 numbers-85 scholarships-20 numbers ineligible.

Math?

Sorry that was a dick answer.

The key is that you still need 7 on the LOS. So the most you have eligible is 6 and someone needs to catch the hike so 5.

So you could put out all eligible guys but 5 will never be as they will be covered.

I was kind of joking, but am curious. Your bad ass "math" response doesn't work either since I don't think 85 guys dress every game and I know 85 guys don't play every game.

Nice post though bro

walk-ons, dressing at home too (think 60 is the road limit, unlimited at home if my memory is good.

There's been duplicates I believe in home games.

Correct and 105 is the roster limit so there are dupes now.

The key is the defense has to pay attention to the end, hence their names in old school-ends, that box in the inner 5 who are ineligible.

Another thing all this reporting junk that is being discussed. Why do guys in the NFL report? They report because they are a lineman that has an ineligible number.

Kluve do to his number doesn’t have to report. It is on the defense to recognize he is lined up as an end.

BTW absolutely terrific play call to make the LS the end in that play.

Eligible by position and number. He had both. The snapper can be in any one of 7 spots.
You see this stuff in hs all the time. I honestly think that Kirk should have hs coaches submit weird plays weekly.

I was very surprised OSU didn’t call TO before that play. Also, do you think we let refs know about the potential play in pregame, so they didn’t accidentally blow an illegal procedure penalty or something? Who was in motion on that play? AJ?

Don’t they call that “the swinging gate”? I believe the center could have snapped that ball sideways as well....

Agree. Shocked the Urb didn't call a time out when he saw the alignment that Iowa moved too. Great play by the Hawks, just wish Kluver kept his feet and scored.

You only have to report if your number is an ineligible number. His number is NOT an ineligible number so he did not have to report.

I think Urban didn't think we would hike the ball. Teams will run this formation, and then go back to the normal set. Usually on extra points tho, not on FG. That is what I think confused OSU.

OSU fan on the bus last night was saying that play would be Urban`s motivation against us next year. I say who cares, OSU usually names the score against us anyway, and it was a glorious play

When we next play them in 2020, very few of the players will still be on the team

It was a total offense back in the 50's and 60's. Have a book handed down from my father that has probably 200 different sets and plays you can run out of it. It is a total numbers offense. Back then it was all based on defense does this we do this after the snap. Still stunned that Urb didn't burn a timeout. Just shows the arrogance that he has. The whole 4* / 5* thing is garbage if you do not execute.... there are guys getting paid and players playing hard on the other sideline every game.

I wish I could see the play from the beginning. When I saw it they were already in the weird formation.

They came out in the normal formation for a FG, then the kicker ran to the left of the line and of course everyone is thinking "WTF?" Then the other guys jogged over next to him, the holder (Rastetter) went to the QB position, and I swear not a single person in Kinnick thought they were actually going to snap the ball.

I thought it was a ploy to get OSU to burn a TO, and I about crapped my pants when we did really snap the ball. The rest is history. I also could not have told you who threw the pass for the life of me, that's how confusing the whole thing was. Damn ballsy to have Rastetter be that guy, a lot of teams would've put a backup QB in to play that role, noting that holders are (or at least were in the past) often QB backups.
