If you want to know why Putin is threatening Ukraine.

Also as one who has been to Ukraine, it has many more vast resources than Russia has. Though as they should the people of Ukraine will fight and thousands will be killed.

By what metric? I don't see Ukraine in the top 10.

1. Russia
> Total resource value: $75.7 trillion
> Oil reserves (value): 60 billion barrels ($7.08 trillion)
> Natural gas reserves (value): 1,680 trillion cu. ft. ($19 trillion)
> Timber reserves (value): 1.95 billion acres ($28.4 trillion)

Russia is the world’s richest country when it comes to natural resources. It leads all other nations in the size of both its natural gas and timber reserves. The country’s vast size is both a blessing and a curse since economical transportation for gas (pipelines) and for timber (railroads) are significantly costly to build. In addition to having such large gas and timber reserves, Russia has the world’s second-largest deposits of coal and the third-largest deposits of gold. Additionally, it has the second-largest estimated deposits of rare earth minerals, although none are currently being mined.

Agriculture. Russia covets the vast and fertile soils in Ukraine. Since the fall of the Soviet Union Russia's ag production has largely remained stable ...while Ukraine has increded its production by 3-5% year after year.

Show me where the data comes from. Russia can't grow much because much of Russia land is not fertile enough. Hence why Russia annexed Crimea.
Now this is propaganda. ^^^^^

Russia did not annex Crimea. Crimea is overwhelmingly Russian and voted in a referendum to secede from the neo-Nazis of Ukraine who overthrew the democratically elected government by a putsch. Pre and post gallup poll #'s support this.

Russia's land does not need to be fertile to produce natural gas. They produce much more wheat than the Ukies. Russia wants nothing to do with that dumpster fire of a nation known as Ukraine. They would be on the hook for another 25 M pensioners.

Is Investopedia also Russian?

World Atlas?

And, massive amounts of that wealth is openly stolen by Putin himself, and those he's allowed to take part in the kleptocracy that marks Russia. It's one of the most corrupt nations on the planet, and the people know it. That's why Putin spends so much time, energy, and money killing journalists, critics, and rivals. That's also why Russia has troll farms staffed by pasty faced trolls pumping out propaganda for global and internal consumption.

Rather than picking on Ukraine, he should simply blow up another Russian apartment block and falsely blame the Chechens.

Did you trust Trump? Mitch McConnell? Ted Cruz?
Interesting. Are you saying only zero trust in Republicans - and Dems are completely trustworthy? How silly.

Most likely true. How is that different from anyone in any government? The Clintons were okay with Yeltsin selling off the state's assets for pennies on the dollar to foreigners. So much so that they intervened in their election to place Boris in office...even when he brought tanks into Red Square. Our politicians enter office penniless and leave centi-millionaires.

That's why Putin spends so much time, energy, and money killing journalists, critics, and rivals.
Tell me about Julian Assange, Steven Donzinger or Alex Saab! Tell me about whistleblowers, John Kiriakou, Jeffrey Sterling

That's also why Russia has troll farms staffed by pasty faced trolls pumping out propaganda for global and internal consumption.
Let's start with your employer, Cass Sunstein, who does the same thing.

Now, let's get back to your OP. Russia is not threatening Ukraine. Ukraine has roughly 250K in their armed forces. 125K of them are in the contact zone right now in Donbass...in violation of the Minsk Accord. Back in April, their Comedian in Chief, Zelensky, threatened to take back Crimea. That ain't happening. In the past month, we have sent the USS Mount Whitney, Porter, and Arleigh Burke into the Black Sea within 12 miles of their border. But, we're not threatening them.

Russia being the richest country on earth for natural resources, yet centuries of bad leadership, backwardness, and lack of property rights and the rule of law are proof positive that the western approach to these issues is superior to Russian Authoritarianism.

So, in a shift to a renewables economy, then Russia has the MOST to lose with "stranded assets".

Makes a lot of sense, and simply supports reasons to try and take over the resources of its neighbor, which are more diversified.

100% agreed. But, like that article briefly explains, it's a blessing and a curse. A blessing to possess them. A curse to extract them and transport them across inhabitable terrain 9 months year.

We have colonized countries all over the globe and kept them down, depriving governments of sharing the wealth with their countrymen. Africa is 1 giant European colony. This past February, 55 year old John Mugafulli was taken out because he wished to have control of all nickel deposits in Tanzania. The Belgians, Dutch, Germans, English and French have all had a slice. We overthrow democracies to install puppets so our Business Roundtable can go in and rape for resources. The Harrimans had a 20 year concession on all magnesium production in the Soviet Union. The Rockefeller's had bank branches there as well.
