If you would’ve told me 2 days ago that Nebber is the 16th best team in the B1G . . .

not only that: they are the one rotting tooth in an otherwise distinguished smile. they don't belong academically in the conference. Not even AAU members. Like ISU, they couldn't cut it, though ISU was in an even worse situation. Most of the reason Nebraska couldn't cut it is that their med school is a semi-autonomous institution in Omaha, so they can't claim all those research dollars as part of UN-L. ISU can't even claim an association with a med school or any significant medical or biomedical research, as that's were much of the money is these days.

Playing the devil's advocate here, but in the grand scheme of things, does Iowa? Yes it's retained it AAU status and appears to be in no danger of losing it anytime soon, but these days, all Iowa can say about its own academics is "thank God for Nebraska".

Iowa at least is a "has been" academically, Nebraska is a "never was".

Iowa’s med school, dental school, and law school are all highly ranked and well regarded professionally

Tied with Michigan State in public university rankings, although I have no idea what they use to establish those rankings. Multiple way tie for 33rd out of nearly 700 isn't the irrelevant place you make it out to be. And also located in easily the smallest population state in the list up to that point.

Iowa is not an awful school but it was ranked much higher not all that long ago.

Writer's Workshop and International Workshop are both world-famous, and for good reason.
The Iowa writers workshop as well as the nonfiction writing program are both number one in the world. The international writing program isn’t an academic program but it brings in the best writers in the world for a semester every year. And the nonfiction writing program is building their new headquarters right across the street from the writers workshop and in the same “writing neighborhood“ as the IWP. If you guys know where the university presidents houses, that’s the neighborhood

but international theme for writing and culture doesn’t move the needle in terms of research dollars, but Iowa is in a solid position going forward with that.

The hospital continues to expand, and within the next few years, the old rec center will be demolished and a new clinical care center opened, plus more stuff I don’t know about.

The brand new college of pharmacy building is quite stunning.

The upshot? Iowa is absolutely solidly tier 1 research university and its athletic programs are among the leaders of the Big Ten and will be sadly among the leaders of the Big Ten even as it has expanded.

The University of Iowa is also a step up from most of the schools in the SEC, even though it is smaller and the total research dollars therefore don’t look as impressive. Institutions like Texas or Wisconsin or Ohio State are just colossal. Obviously they’re going to have, per capita, more research dollars coming in. What is really incredible is that Iowa has been able to maintain and build the status in a small rural state, and in a very small city relative to others in the conference now in cities like Los Angeles or New York city market or Detroit metro or Chicago etc.
