Kofi was no Kofi when he first got to Illinois.
Will be interesting to see how Payne develops there. Payne and Kofi played each other on the AAU circuit. Both testify that Payne was the better player then. Orlando Antigua has a very solid reputation for developing bigs and it really shows with Kofi. He’s was so much better this year than last that it was scary.
Maybe they can improve Payne similarly. Maybe not. I don’t think there’s any question that the potential is there though.

I’ll take your word about the wins but keep in mind that McCaffrey’s tenure includes the worst 10 year stretch in the history of the Illinois program. Even cherry picking, winning on average one more game per year than a program at its historical worst is certainly nothing to brag about. I would hope Fran leads the head-to-head series during his tenure. * just checked — NOPE — Fran is 10-12 all time against an Illinois program at its historic nadir. smh
Underwood won 4 league games his first year, 7 his second and in four seasons — two of which were abysmal — he still has a better league winning percentage (.513) than Fran has in 11 seasons (.505).
In four seasons, Underwood has finished second twice and won a BTT Championship. In 11 seasons Fran has been unable to do any of those things.
Really bush league cherry picking to be honest. Margaret would likely fire you.

I think Underwood is a pretty good coach. I am not sure why I have that "he's a cheater" thing go off in my gut. Maybe it is just that he is at Illannoy, where success seems to only come with cheating.
Fran might not be coach of the decade, but if you ignore the first two years when he was digging out of the depths of Lickland, Fran has only had one sub-.500 season in the B1G. If he would start adding in some post-season success, I would consider that pretty good. Iowa's lack of success after the regular season is my biggest knock on Fran. His choice of quality kids with no off-court issues is his greatest success.

Antigua offered up names for our coaching search and talked to the recruits about staying. We’re not expecting much attrition other than the third AC we’re trying to move on from.
Miller wanted to stay. Met with Underwood and it went well. His mom would not let that happen. Underwood signed a player and moved on.
Would be cool if Iowa players could embarrass themselves with a trophy one of these years.

She's one of those parents. Supposedly, the final straw was that our seniors got extra tickets to the tournament games and they did not. She expected to be treated differently, expected Miller to get PG duties with Ayo (Cousy award winner) and Curbelo (6MOY) on the team, and wanted to be somewhere that they'd give him that role.
I understand that Miller's path to the NBA includes more ballhandling, but the guy started every game on a 1-seed despite not deserving it at times and other players were undeniably better fits for that role. Oh well, go somewhere that makes you happy.
Sounds like we're about to round out our staff with two associate HC's to go along with Frazier. Should be able to keep most of the guys with the hires.
Illinois had alot of success during the regular season,but can't close the deal. You made the finals years back only to get destroyed. I admire the support your fanbase gives the program. I wish we did. However the best program not to do much in the tourney is Purdue. They are always near the top or on the top in the Big. They have always been a physical team,but MSU and Wiscy have taken it to another dirty level(I hate both programs)[I have been avoiding this and most message boards since Illinois' colossally disappointing loss to Loyola ... too much other stuff going on to take my beatings online from anonymous A-holes, too!]
I lived in Iowa for a long time and have a LOT of Hawkeyes friends, so I follow Iowa basketball fairly closely. I just cannot make up my mind about Fran. On one hand, he's taken Iowa basketball to a spot where - in terms of national relevance - it has not been for MANY years, and that's even more impressive considering the sorry state of the program during the Lick years. Even with a "Fran Fade" in some of those years, Iowa has had a lot of teams ranked in the top 25 for stretches, and they were a bona fide "top 10 team" this past year. On the other hand, he has been there for a very long time, and I think it's totally fair to wonder if he's near his ceiling, especially without some new assistant to drastically improve recruiting.
So, the question really becomes what Iowa fans expect. Illinois fans quite simply want/expect SOME coach to win us a National Championship. We are pretty easily (by metrics) the best program all-time to never have won it, and our fairly impressive regular season history as a program has depressingly little to show for itself come March Madness ... so that is the goal. Plain and simple. We're realistic enough to know that can't be a YEARLY goal, but that is the END goal, always, with a baseline of consistently ranked teams that are in the upper half of the Big Ten and able to threaten a deep NCAAs run every 3-4 years. Given the resources/potential at Illinois, I think that's a fair goal, but it's also why our fan base can come across as "delusional" or "insecure" or "crazy" to those that don't like the Illini.
Having lived in Iowa City, I PERSONALLY have perceived somewhat of a divide between fans that see no reason Iowa couldn't do whatever a school like Wisconsin could do and fans who practically take pride in the fact that "little ole Iowa" is as consistently good as it is in both major sports, given the lack of instate talent and whatnot (i.e., they don't expect much more). I happen to be in the middle. While Iowa might not enjoy as many "natural advantages" on paper (for basketball) as a school like Illinois or Maryland or something, that type of thing seems to matter less and less these days. An elite recruiter can ABSOLUTELY get top recruits to go play for a good Iowa program in a great B1G college town like Iowa City if recruiters have proven to be able to do the same for places like Ames, IA or Manhattan, KS. Wouldn't you have to think that if Fran can't sort of "reload" with some very talented freshmen over the next few years to get back to this level, his seat would start to get warm? Obviously, a Garza is a once in a lifetime player, but Iowa fans are passionately reengaged with the program, and I wouldn't think they would tolerate dropping back down out of the top of the conference for too many years in a row.

I think Michigan at the top is probably correct. I don't see Holtmann ever getting close, just something off with his ability to finish out a season. Izzo's era is probably winding down, I guess he may have one more good run. IU? LOL! Hired a 62 year old guy, not going anywhere.
Fran will be 62 in two weeks but I don’t think that’s the reason that Iowa is not going anywhere.

If it were any other school (except Auburn), I’d expect Wade to be gone before the season starts but LSU... they’ll keep him until he’s incarcerated.
LSU's AD has family ties to Mark Emmert. Believe he's married to his daughter or something like that, so I fully expect immunity.
Sorry, but IU is ranked way, way too high! Probably about 6 slots too high for my liking...
Essentially, the likelihood of winning a national championship boils down to Program Resources + Ability to Recruit top talent.
No way in hell IU is any lower than 5th in the league on those metrics. No way.
Have you seen their on floor product the last 10+ years? They should be about 10th on the list.
