I'm a bit surprised how Iowa got suddenly good in basketball.

I'm sorry for coming late into the discussion, but I've been pretty busy of late. I must say your basketball etam surprised a lot of people, case in point: me. How did Iowa rise from obscurity to being legitimate contenders? I liken the resurgence of your BB program to your FB team. If this is not what one would call "the perfect storm," I don't know what is.

The question of the day: Will Iowa advance to the Sweet 16? Anyone?

The 30 second clock and allowing freedom of movement by actually calling fouls.

We could make a Sweet Sixteen run but of late in the Big Ten we're back to allowing grabbing, shoving and other great basketball skills to effect games.

By the way, I'm an admirer of Chambers for his guts in calling things as he saw them last season despite knowing he'd be fined $10,000 bucks.

You're in the wrong place to get an honest response of that question. I think there are some here that think Iowa won't make the tournament.
For some of Iowa's more volatile fans, the basketball team has gone from being so good that they would win the rest of their games about a month ago, to being so bad that they won't win another game.

Hawks start four seniors and a junior, who have been playing together for a while. That gives Iowa a big advantage over many less experienced teams, but as the season has moved along, some other teams have been catching up. It is hard to assess how much of slump that Iowa is having is other teams improving or Iowa just not shooting well. Probably is a little of both.

No.

Suddenly? As in they got a little better each year over a 5 -6 year period?

Compared to the glaciers, they got better suddenly.

Actually, success in basketball is not new to Iowa, as they have a long history and tradition of excellence. Until the recent resurgence, they struggled for a few years. Poor coaching and overall mismanagement contributed to that (about) 10 year lull.

Fran is an excellent judge of talent and a very hard worker.

He also has a very experienced staff of former head coaches.

He has retained kids, improved the quality of recruits for the most part each year, and coached the up.

But as smart as he is (Wharton at Penn)... He can also be stubborn and often that is more of a negative than positive charector trait.

I knew someone would have to blame the officials for Iowa's late swoon. Last week it was all about "Tired Legs" if I recall.

It can be both!!! :) Have you ever heard of a storm causing flash flooding AND including tornados? Ok, what do you do? Seek low ground and drown, or high ground and get sucked into the funnel?

I do agree that the officiating in the Big is veering more towards the year to year norm vs how games were called earlier in the year, No excuse cuz it ends up being the same for all teams, You have to adjust to it. The drive by Sapp IIRC were he was being chest bumped on the drive from the top of the key to the point were he was called for a very questionable offensive foul is a prime example. The defender never had position in front of him.

I always try to take the "high ground" and leave the "low ground" to others. I will keep my eyes open for the funnel.

Oh we've been out of tournament contention for some time now. Records don't matter with Iowa. It all depends on what you've done in the last couple of games and if that wasn't good enough for our fans. That alone determined our NCAA tournament fate.

So, yeah....we're out. Too bad.
