On Saturday, September 17 I will walk out my front door, turn right and begin the Wrestling for Life "I Heart Wrestling" Walk. One week, and roughly 70 miles, later I will walk through the front door of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum and celebrate by handing out checks to causes and organizations we support.
I have selected that week because it marks the first anniversary of my valve replacement surgery. I will also be celebrating the "new and improved" ...me.
You may help by pledging your financial support either as a flat donation or by the mile (for those who doubt my ability to complete the route). You may email your pledge to me at jbrown@wrestlingforlife.org or you may now donate on the Wrestling for Life Facebook page. My goal is to raise $10,000. All funds will go toward the support of our major programs:
1. Providing free major wrestling event tickets to kids' wrestling clubs, middle school teams and youth organizations like Boys and Girls Clubs. To date we have given away over 7,500 tickets.
2. Supplying financially challenged kids' clubs and middle school teams with wrestling shoes, ear guards and other gear.
3. Facilitating the growth of girls' and women's wrestling.
4. Urbanizing the sport by contributing to various Beat the Streets chapters.
5. Contributing to the expansion of educational facilities and activities at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum.
We are also looking for walk corporate sponsors. Wouldn't your company like to be associated with an event that will get more kids involved with the "world's oldest and greatest sport"?
American kids need the values taught by wrestling more than ever - self-discipline, tenacity, self-reliance, toughness and self-responsibility. You can make a difference in the future of a lot of kids and this great sport.
If you'd like to join me on any part of the walk - stay tuned. I'll be posting a tentative route and schedule at a later date.
