Hawkeye Report takes a look at what in-state offensive prospects to follow during the camp circuit this summer.

Quarterback

The quarterback position is one that the Hawkeyes coaches have frequently gone out of state and with Max Duggan of Lewis Central off the board, that may to be the case in the Class of 2019. Beau Cornwell of West Branch (6-2, 180 pounds) visited Iowa City for a spring practice and had high praise for Iowa. Trevor Paulsen of Marion (6-2, 175 pounds) has also been on the Iowa radar after a strong showing last summer at camp in Iowa City. Drake Miller of Fort Dodge (6-0, 205 pounds) and Beau Lombardi of West Des Moines Valley (6-2, 220 pounds) are two others in this class to follow during the summer.

In the Class of 2020, Mitch Randall of Waukee (6-1, 195 pounds), Daniel Wright of Sergeant Bluff-Luton (6-6, 185 pounds), and Cam Miller (6-1, 205 pounds) of Solon are a few of the top in-state signal callers. A familiar name to follow in 2021 is Ashton Cook of Iowa City Regina (6-3, 165 pounds). He threw 640-yards in limited action as a freshman for the Regals.

Running Back

The Hawkeyes currently have an offer out to Iowa's top player in the Class of 2020, Gavin Williams of Southeast Polk (6-0, 195 pounds). This standout has proven to be a versatile threat in the run and receiving game for the Rams over the first two years of his prep career. Iowa State was the first school to offer him early on in his prep career.

Our top-rated rusher in the senior class, Jayson Murray of Dowling Catholic (5-9, 180 pounds), had a big role in propelling the Maroons to the Class 4A title last fall. He racked up 1,947-yards on the ground as a junior while finding the end zone 29 times. Keegan Simmons of Cedar Rapids Prairie (6-2, 185 pounds) and Gage Hazen-Fabor of Williamsburg (5-8, 165 pounds) are two others to keep an eye on in this class but the Division I-A attention for this position has been limited overall.

Wide Receiver/Tight End

Athleticism is what has helped Carter Bell of Bettendorf (5-10, 175 pounds) catch the eye of the Hawkeyes as he is expected to move from quarterback to wide receiver at the college level. He racked up over 2,000 total yards last fall as a junior for the Bulldogs and followed that up with a strong season of track. Bell has been a frequent visitor to Iowa City over the last two years and knows the importance of having a strong run during the camp circuit.

At tight end, T.J. Schnurr of Bishop Garrigan (6-5, 230 pounds) and Maverick Gatrost of Center Point-Urbana (6-5, 225 pounds) are both athletes who have caught the attention of the Iowa staff. Both have great frames and have the athleticism to project out on either side of the chains.

Moving to the Class of 2020, one prospect with Hawkeye connections who will eventually have to make a sporting decision down the road between football and basketball is AJ Coons of Solon (6-4, 175 pounds). He led the Spartans with 552 yards receiving but followed that up by averaging 17.5 points a game on the basketball court during the winter.

Offensive Line

The Class of 2019 has a chance to be a special one on the line with Ezra Miller of Ridge View (6-6, 280 pounds), Tyler Endres of Norwalk (6-6, 290 pounds), and Noah Fenske of New Hampton (6-5, 275 pounds) all committed but this class is loaded with other big men that remain on the Iowa radar. Jackson Leistikow of Cedar Falls (6-3, 275 pounds), Jesse Alger of Dowling Catholic (6-4, 285 pounds), and Will Clapper of Baxter (6-3, 270 pounds) have all visited Iowa City over the past twelve months and are working hard to excel this summer in front of the Iowa staff. Also, keep an eye on Jared Penning of Clear Lake (6-7, 320 pounds) as well. He has seen a number of Division I-AA offers over the spring come his way.

The two most likely candidates for a scholarship in the Class of 2020 this summer at this spot are Josh Volk of Cedar Rapids Xavier (6-4, 285 pounds) and Tyler Miller of Greene County (6-9, 275 pounds). Both have been able to make visits to Iowa City and hold offers from other programs. Miller may be the hottest recruit in the state with schools like Nebraska, UCF, and a host of others extending scholarships recently. With Iowa picking up their attention for him during the spring, an offer may be around the corner. Ryan Boles of Dowling Catholic (6-4, 280 pounds) and Logan Black of Des Moines Lincoln (6-4, 250 pounds) are also ranked among our top prospects in this class.

He has only been in high school a single year but Luke Pinnick of West Marshall (6-4, 275 pounds) has a chance to be a sought-after recruit. The Iowa State coaches were his first scholarship but a recent visit for the Iowa spring game show that the Hawkeyes are interested. Pinnick has plenty of time to make a final decision but look for the Hawkeyes to factor in.

Kicker

Drake Nettles of Lewis Central (5-8, 145 pounds) and Aaron Blom of Oskaloosa (5-10, 155 pounds) have both proven to be the top kickers within state borders. Nettles hit a 45-yard field goal as a junior and has received a wide range of Division I attention. Blom was nearly automatic as a sophomore by hitting 50-51 on PATs and connecting on a 49-yard field.
