In the Early 1960's, the South End Zone was Enclosed AND the Water Tower was Painted

Should the South End Zone be Enclosed?

  • Yes. It should be addressed right away. It should be a priority project.

  • Yes, but only after other projects (wrestling, baseball, etc) have been addressed/approved

  • No. It is fine as is.

  • No. (But it should have been enclosed in the first place!!)

I always wondered, like many of you, why they did not completely enclose the South end zone when it was re-done. Look at the gaps in the pictures below.

And now look at how nice the enclosed North end zone is looking as it is taking shape.

Should the athletic dept look into enclosing the South end zone? Or is it good enough and time to move on to improving the baseball and wrestling facilities?

This is a pic from the early 1960's; a couple observations:

* The South Endzone, ironically, was enclosed.

* It looks like the water tower used to be painted with "State University of Iowa."

No, it's fine as is, plus as you mentioned there are other priorities building -wise that should be addressed (baseball). Also, I think they'd have to tear down the south stands and rebuild to address sightlines. I doubt that would happen seeing as they just fixed that with new locker rooms et al.

Enclosing the South EZ might look cool, but it would be adding thousands of "less desirable" seats to a stadium that isn't regularly sold out now. When it was built, it was part of a $90 million project that really transformed Kinnick into a great venue. It included the plaza on the outside of the stadium, and of course, the new press box. It was a fabulous addition at the time!

Maybe when the have to start turning away ticket buyers again they can look at stadium expansion.

The next project for Kinnick should be to install individual chair seats in the main (east / west) stands, at least between the 20s. Bench seats (even with the portable seat backs) are not exactly 21st century stuff.

Personally I want it to be uncomfortable to sit, I want people standing and cheering the entire game.

We have nice comfy seating in the middle sections down low at Carver and the place is a morgue most games.

True, but the chair seats are not to blame. The people sitting in them are...along with the terrible design of Carver. And when you hit your 40s or so, standing for 3 or 4 hours ain't as much fun as it used to be. Besides, replacing bench seating with chair seats is standard in the latest stadium renovations, not to mention that Wrigley Field is one of the loudest baseball facilities on the planet, and every one of the about 42,000 seats is a chair seat...some of the newer ones are even padded.

Yes, the South was enclosed, but it was bleachers. The tennis courts behind were pretty close and people were jammed in behind the stands before and after games. The grassy areas in the corners were popular seating places.

The bleachers are all bench seating
