I looked up some numbers between PSU and Iowa since 2009.
Wrestlers who score 15 or more points at nationals (average)
Iowa 3.11
PSU 4.4
Average number of points scored for wrestlers who scored greater than 20 points at nationals
Iowa 21 (65 pts. or even if we equaled PSU's >20 pt. scorers we would still only average 92.4pts)
PSU 24.3 (106.9pts)
Iowa's top 3 point scorers in the last 9 years only averaged 23.6 points at nationals (these wrestlers were McDonough 25, Metcalf 24, and Borschel 22 all in 2010) Also Ramos in 2016 at 22
PSU's top 3 point scorers in the last 7 years averaged 29 points at nationals. (Taylor 30.5, Retherford 28.5 and 28)
20 point scorers per year average
Iowa 1.33
PSU 3.14
3 out of the last 7 years PSU has had a higher average (25.6, 25.5, 25.5) score of out of the >20 point scorers than Iowa's highest single score in the last 9 years (McDonough in 2010 @25 pts).
Ultimately this is a pretty tough hill to climb for any team but what I really take out of it is that no matter how good Iowa's wrestlers are, we still need help from other teams. Too often a wrestler will clam up against the top Iowa guys and wrestle just to avoid bonus points. I have not watched enough PSU wrestling to know if they are just that much better where even if the other wrestler clams up they can still get bonus points or if other wrestlers just have not clammed up as much against them.
Its no secret that we need to upgrade talent (I think help is on the way) but we also need our top wrestlers to put up more bonus points (This year PSU's top 5 guys scored 28 more points than our champion. Eg. subtract Clarks score of 20 from all the PSU guys and they still scored 28 points).
Some interesting numbers here that kind of makes it seem like an impossible task to beat PSU in the near future. (I did not realize the numbers were this skewed when I started searching for this data)
