Interesting thought I just read in another thread…

Add in that JL isn't "getting it" at QB (having a hard time mentally @ the D1 level). We will have a very young QB at the helm next year. Only saving grace would be if the portal someone in, but will not be a slinger/runner, it'd be SP clone.

Well, none of the upcoming QBs fit the Petras description. All we can do now is compare HS film (so apples to apples) of Spencer, Joe, Carson and Marco. Spencer was never thought to be mobile. The other three were described as mobile and their HS film shows them all to be mobile. Joe Labas is a good natural runner as is Lainz. May is a surprisingly good runner for his size, throws well on the run and can overpower smaller defenders, he just lays out a defensive back trying to stop May at the goal. May lowers his head and just bowls the defender into the end zone. I swear the kid looks as big as Jack Campbell.

There is a weird asymmetrical nature of the two Brian Ferentz OC era QBs. One, Big Nate is either first or second in every Iowa career passing stat, but completion percentage and the other guy, Spencer Petras is probably the worst Iowa regular starting QB (excluding injury or emergency starts) since Hayden arrived at Iowa. Phil Seuss and Gordy were way better than Petras.
