Back on topic. Punitive tariffs are almost always bad. Tariffs that take away the advantage of another government subsidizing an industry to gain a trade advantage are worth evaluating.

Came to this thread expecting a discussion on tariffs. Came away disappointed
I think the best thing for the world economy is free and open trade. No tariffs. BUT, that isnt the way the world treats us. They restrict our imports and they steal our intellectual property. Certain economies seem to have 'rules for thee and not for me'.
So, I think that we need to respond accordingly. tariffs as threats or tariffs in fact.
Am I convinced this is the right answer? No I am not. But we will find out and answer this question for the modern economy.
You even know this won't work. It's ok to say that Trump is clueless. It really is. Risking our economy over this is a bad move. All that will happen is that the rest of the world leaves will leave us behind and do their business elsewhere rather than having to put up with Trump's daily tantrums.
The rest of the world knows we are the world's biggest economy and they can't afford not to do business with us. Tariffs will crush Canada in particular. Time for people to fall in line.
Again, I'd be for zero tariffs, zero barriers, zero theft of intellectual property. What should we do about those things? Continue to take it in the rear? Actual question. How would you manage this? We cannot keep being abused by other countries and not reply in kind.
