Was poking around at some Iowa-UW series data for a discussion in another thread and came across this (to me, anyway) interesting factoid.
In the past 25-years of the series, the higher-ranked AP team has really dominated. Now, that isn't particularly surprising, but what was a little surprising to me is that in the few (4) times there HAS been an upset, it's been Iowa pulling the upset 3 times and Wisconsin only once.
In fact, you have to go back to 1997 to see the last time a lower-rated Wisconsin team beat a ranked Iowa team (unranked Wisconsin beat #12 Iowa 13-10 that year; but it should be noted that was the high-water mark ranking for a pretty pedestrian 7-5 team in the late Fry era that lost 3 of its last 4, including a disheartening Sun Bowl defeat).
Iowa, meantime, upset higher-ranked Badger teams in 2004, 2005 and 2015.
Going into this year's matchup, Iowa is ranked #9 and UW is ranked #25 unranked. Wisconsin has not beaten a Top 10 ranked Iowa team since 1959.
