Interesting word etymology: hush puppies

Had no idea on that. That does remind me of when we used to have a Long John Silver in town and my wife would mainly eat the hush puppies and the crispy pieces at the bottom of the fish or chicken basket. Those were by far her favorite. I could trade her all my crispies for another chicken plank!

Don’t trust everything you see on the internet. It’s 100% BS.

The real answer to the origin of hush puppies was that it had a different name for quite some time (red horse bread called that because it was famously sold at an area that fried fish including red horse suckers and then cornbread in the now fishy tasting oil) and it wasn’t until the 20s and 30s that restaurants in Florida started calling it Hush puppies. Allegedly called that to hush down the dogs but that’s probably just a quaint story with no real basis in fact.

Says "don't trust everything on the internet" and then posts "something from the internet" to back up a claim.

If you have a source you can cut and paste an update to Wikipedia:

The first recorded use of the word "hush-puppy" dates to 1899.[4] The name has no verified origin. Etymology is attributed to a variety of sources. It is said that the name came from hunters, fishermen, or other cooks who would fry some basic cornmeal mixture (possibly that they had been bread-coatingor battering their own food with) and feed it to their dogs to "hush the puppies" during cook-outs or fish-fries.[5] Although there are many possible origins for the dish, it is found to be akin to "red-horse bread", named after the red horse fish of the South Carolina rivers. Associated with former slave chef Romeo Govan, "red horse bread" is said to have been similar in consistency and ingredients.[6]"Red horse bread" of South Carolina then became "hushpuppies" in Georgia around 1927, then gained national traction around 1943 in Florida.[7]
