Iowa #18 All Time for Most Appearance in AP Top 25

Honestly surprised we’re above Purdue. They have been one of the best and consistent Big Ten programs for many decades even if that hasn’t translated into overall national success. While our last few decades have been feast or famine, with long stretches of famine and the feast not really being all that great.

I feel like Purdue spent a lot of weeks at like 26-30 and then ending up like tying for a league title, haha. I’m sad Illinois was SO bad from 2014 to 2019, or we would have stayed in the top 10. Wonder what percent of MSU’s weeks are with Izzo.

Nice. I'm a bit surprised honestly, but it's cool to see.

I know we're not a blue blood, but IMO this means some people need to dispense with the "We're just Iowa" mentality. No reason this program can't continue to have some success. Historically, this has been a solid program, and expectations should be a little higher. Kinda gets under my skin when some people sell our program short.

Our problem is the changing demographics and mercantilist demands of the post modern era. We have only been to the Sweet 16 or better 3 times in the last 35 seasons. Our historic success is becoming more ancient every year. Our last FF will have been 42 seasons when the tournament starts in '22.

Iowa plays in a tiny media market, which will make NIL an even bigger hill to climb in recruiting. Iowa plays in a fairly dishonest conference that tilts heavily toward about 5 schools and always has-or at least in the last 50 years to my knowledge, which inherently makes it harder to break the cycle. I'd say ask Lute Olson if he were alive.

Iowa has an unreasonable approach to citizenship issues and grants fewer academic exemptions than almost every major basketball program. It is very hard to win big at Iowa.

^ Indiana is ? However, I’m NOT surprised that Indiana is behind Louisville. At this point, all-time rankings are only ranking IU above UL if 1) all they’re taking into account is NCs or 2) they’re clouded by the “old days,” IMO. I guess they could be considering historic conference strength, but people seem to rarely do that. If they did, programs like Illinois, Purdue and Iowa would be ranked higher than they already are in subjective lists, as the Big Ten has always been brutal.

Or they are looking at Top 25 appearances in the AP poll only. Not sure how they accounted for when it was only a top 20.
