The Iowa Hawkeyes held off a 2nd half run to advance to the Quarterinals of the Big Ten Tiurnament on Friday. Iowa jumped out to an early 20-6 lead behind consecutive 3 pointers by Joe Weiskamp and Ryan Kreiner at the 13:00 mark of the first half. Daniel Oturu did his best to keep the Gophers season alive, netting 9 first half points to go along with 7rebounds. But he was no match for POY candidate, Luka Garza who paced the Hawkeyes with 17 first half points, to lead 41-28 at the break.
Iowa was able to extend their lead to as much as 21 early in the 2nd half, before Garza was called for some bullshit 4th foul that sent him to the bench with 13:22 left in the 2nd half. Minnesota capitalized on his absence, and when Marcus Carr made his 3rd 3 pointer of the 2nd half, the Hawkeye lead was trimmed to 63-60. However, with 6:30 left, Fran McCaffrey called on his POY candidate Garza once again, and he responded with 6 points over the next 65 seconds, to seal the Iowa victory. “Luka plays hard every second of every game, but he’s smart enough to know that we need him and he can’t get that 5th foul”
Garza finished with 31 points to go along 14 rebounds. Freshman CJ Fredrick scored 16 points, while Connor McCaffrey neared a triple double with 8 points, 9, assists, and 9 rebounds. Daniel Oturu lead the Gophers with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
What’s next: Iowa advances to play 4 seed Illinois in the quarterfinals on Friday, while the dirty rodents have the rest of the year off to contemplate why they are so terrible.
