How's this for a possibility?

Semifinals Dec. 29:
Orange Bowl: Clemson vs. Notre Dame
Cotton Bowl: Alabama vs. Iowa

National Championship Game Jan. 7:
Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara, CA: Iowa vs. Notre Dame

I have a difficult time thinking of a better scenario than that. Iowa wins the national title by taking revenge on ND for its "Fainting Irish" cheating in the 1952 game in South Bend that ended in a 14-14 tie. Iowa came in a 21-point underdog, and the tie cost ND the national title. (Look it up. It's classic ND.) Anyway, dream big or go home. ;)

You mean the 1952 game in Iowa City when Notre Dame won 27-0 and finished the year at 7-2-1.

I like your thinking, however it is too early in the day to be drinking. LOL

That's bold Aristotle, but I'd rather see the Hawks as the 3 seed vs. Clemson. Recalling what Bama did to MSU in 2015 makes me want to avoid them. We will get the 3 seed because ND will lose either @ NW, vs. FSU, or @ USC. The Big 12 will cannibalize itself and all will have two losses. Pac 12 is out already. The 4th seed will either be one-loss ND or OSU, who we will beat in the BIG championship. Maybe one of them could upset Bama so we could play them in the title game.

Bring on Bama! Would love to see that game.

No, no I do not. It was 1953, and it was a 14-14 tie in South Bend that cost Notre Dame the national title and, many say, also cost ND Coach Frank Leahy his job.

Here's what happened: Notre Dame scored on the final play of the first half after TWO Notre Dame players who had been standing in the huddle suddenly collapsed when they saw time was about to expire, and ND had no timeouts left. The "injury" timeout gave them one more play, and they tossed a short TD pass to tie the game.

And then, in true ND fashion, the refs let them do it again at the end of the game. Iowa led 14-7 despite coming in as 21-point underdogs. Notre Dame got inside the Iowa 10 with only seconds to play, again with no timeouts remaining. And again, Notre Dame players faked injuries to stop the clock. Otherwise, the game would have been over.

Three incomplete passes followed and brought up fourth down with time for one final play. And again, just as in the first half, ND completed a pass into the end zone for the TD. But instead of going for the win with a 2-pt. conversion, they settled for a kick and the tie, again in gutless ND fashion.

As a result, the rule was changed so that when a timeout was called for an injury, the clock would restart on the officials' signal instead of on the next snap.

National headlines following that fiasco dubbed Notre Dame the "Fainting Irish," and Iowa Head Coach Forest Evashevski left no doubt about what he thought in his press conference back in Iowa City. Taking a page from the great sportswriter Grantland Rice Evy famously said, "I hate to turn poet, but I can't help but recite one here, and that is, 'When the one great scorer comes to write against our name, he won't ask whether we won or lost, but how come we got gypped at Notre Dame."

And there you have it.

BTW: Remember, I said I was dreaming, and so why not dream big? After all, much crazier things have happened.

Iowa has a better chance of winning the college football playoff than 93% of the teams in FBS but it is still not a very good chance of making the playoff

I love the optimism, but the current analytics have Iowa anywhere from 3% to 8% for winning out. Barring major injuries, Iowa will be in every game. But long way from that to winning every game.
I think that even if Iowa wins out, I don't see the committee giving us much love, unless however we beat an undefeated tOSU in the championship game. Maybe a one loss Michigan win in the BIG gets it done, but I think it all depends on who else is out there with one loss. What would be a complete kick in the dick is to win out and beat an undefeated tOSU in the BIG championship game, which leaves Iowa and tOSU each with on loss, and the committee chooses tOSU over Iowa.

Oh, I know what happened. I just read 1952 on your original post.

Sorry about that. I mistyped the year on my first post. I wasn't around for either of those games, but my dad was, and he had a record called "Hooray for the Hawkeyes!" produced by Davenport's Dick Lamb. It's still the best sports highlight recording I've ever heard. It mostly covers the 1950s and Evy, but it also has the complete recording of Nile Kinnick's Heisman speech, and another recording of Kinnick talking about the role of football in relation to the university's educational mission.

I listened to that record so much as a kid that I still have parts of it memorized. And I have to say, those were the early years of Jim Zabel on WHO, and his calls were fabulous, including that infamous Notre Dame game. I know some people didn't care for Z, but for my money he was the best college football broadcaster I've ever heard, bar none. Sure, he started making more mistakes as he got older, but he never lost that fan-like enthusiasm for the Hawkeyes. Iowa radio broadcasts have never been the same since Learfield forced him--and Ron Gonder and Bob Brooks--out of the picture.

Anyway, sorry about having the wrong year on my original post.

I like the dream!

Players need to take it one week at a time ... and our current 4-game stretch .... Maryland to Northwestern, could be the toughest stretch of the whole season. However, that said, I really, really like this squad. I believe they're a group that is capable of surprising. However, in order to do so ... they need to keep on improving!

I don't see them choosing OSU over Iowa in that situation, because we would have the head to head win. However, I could certainly see a situation where the committee would choose a 1 loss Oklahoma or SEC school for example over a 1 loss Iowa, and the Big 10 gets left out entirely.

When we beat OSU in the title game they can't take them over us!
That's not true! "They," the committee, most certainly can! That's why we still don't have a true National Champion and just another beauty contest for the "experts."

BF isn't going to let anyone forget who we are, period. I loved stepping on IU's throat when they were already cooked last week. He will do that to any opponent any chance he gets, and it's fantastic.

Best thing about him is he bleeds black and gold like us, he's a Hawkeye through and through.

I would love another game against Urbbbbbb as no player on either roster had played each other in college before last season. Wehave a huge mental edge on them no matter what any talking head might eventually say.

All this CFP talk is all well and good, as I like to fantasize too, but should Iowa fall short of these rather lofty fantastical daydreams, no one who has contributed to this thread better start any of the "Fire Fatcat Ferentz and strip all the players of their scholarships!" chatter we've waded through in the past.

This is why so many of you people demand KF be fired every time he loses. I can hear it now.....

“It was all setting up for us to beat Alabama and Notre Dame for a National Title... until KF went back to his old ways”.

Agreed, but you know the committee is going to want to take a one loss tOSU over a one loss Iowa. I am not saying they would, but there would be many on the selection committee that would want tOSU, especially if it happened to be a close game.

That’s not what the committee does. They don’t get together and decide who they want in the CFP.

They get together and decide who the 4 best teams in the country are. If the committee believes Iowa is one of the best teams in the country when they decide who plays in the CFP, Iowa will get in.

If the shoe fits. Our offense is much more dynamic, multi-dimensional and less predictable than previous years. The coaches deserve credit for this. If they go back into a shell and we lose a game because of it, then they should be criticized. Credit and criticism where it's due.
