Iowa at Penn State: Make or break

James Franklin has made hay against Iowa over the past 4 years at Penn State. Entering his 7th season, Franklin is 0-4 this season, coming off a 30-23 loss at Nebraska on Saturday. He benched junior starting QB Sean Clifford for sophomore Will Levis in Lincoln during the game.

The Hawkeyes are coming off a 35-7 win at Minnesota, to build on a six game winning streak, which is the longest in series history.

Well, the Hawkeyes next opponent happens to own a 6 game win streak of their own against Iowa. It has been 10 years, since Iowa last won in this one, and 11 years, since a W was obtained on the road.

None of the three QBs likely to see the field for Iowa or Penn State are hitting a huge number of pass plays. Much of the Nittany Lions running game has been fueled by the QB scrambling for yardage.

The last three losses have been one possession games for Penn State - Iowa. It should be an interesting game on Saturday in a near empty Beaver Stadium.

For the fifth straight year, Iowa and Penn State have taken the field in Big Ten cross-over play. Penn State has Michigan to follow, while Iowa will host Nebraska.

Franklin had a five game losing streak in SEC play his first season, though a non-conference win over Army was in the middle basically.

In his second year, he lost 3 of first 4 in SEC play, but closed out the season winning the rest of his games.

In his final season, at Vanderbilt, Franklin opened SEC play losing the first 3 games, then winning four of last 5 games.

In 2014, his first season in Happy Valley, Franklin lost four straight B1G games, including a 31-24 2OT loss at home to Ohio State. He finished the season 2-6 in Big Ten, with lone wins over Rutgers (3-5) and at Indiana (1-7).

In 2015, Penn State closed out the season on a three game losing streak, and opened Big Ten play at Michigan with another loss, so last time Penn State lost four straight in the Big Ten was under their current coach.

So, will the streak hit 7 for Penn State or can Iowa flip it in 2020?
