– The University of Iowa Athletics Department announced Thursday the creation of a pilot program to expand beer and wine sales at athletic facilities. Beginning this fall, beer and wine will be available for purchase throughout Kinnick Stadium, with the exception of areas immediately adjacent to the respective student section. Athletic events at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Duane Banks Field and Bob Pearl Field will also be included in the pilot program during the 2021-22 school year.

“We have been working with our campus partners on this for some time now and we are committed to maintaining a safe and enjoyable game day environment. While there is an opportunity for increased revenue, this decision was based on enhancing the fan experience and providing an additional amenity to our fans,” said Gary Barta, Henry B. and Patricia B. Tippie Director of Athletics Chair. “At the conclusion of the 2021-22 academic year, we will work with our campus partners to review this pilot program.”

Thirty percent of net alcohol sales will be directed towards research-based initiatives developed and supported by the UI Alcohol Harm Reduction Committee, formed in 2009 to decrease high-risk drinking and the related harmful consequences.

The athletics department will also modify its parking lot hours as part of the pilot program. In the past, UI controlled parking lots opened for tailgating at 6 a.m. on game day, regardless of kickoff time. Beginning this fall, parking lots will open no more than six hours prior to kickoff and no earlier than 6 a.m. Parking on the night prior to football games will be limited to RVs only. There are no changes in postgame policies.

“We recognize that the pregame atmosphere around Kinnick Stadium is a significant part of the fan experience,” said UI Interim President John Keller. “We are adopting policies that encourage Hawkeyes to enjoy game day traditions while reducing underage access to alcohol and the negative impacts of binge drinking.”

Data from the 2019 season indicates 92% of vehicles utilizing university controlled lots on game day enter within six hours prior to kickoff.

Iowa joins seven other Big Ten schools who currently sell beer and/or wine in public areas at its home football games. Approximately half of the schools from the Power 5 conferences will sell beer and/or wine at their home football games this fall.

Fans continue to be encouraged to alert Iowa Athletics about inappropriate or unruly behavior by either calling or texting the UI Athletics Game Day Hotline (319-384-3000) and reporting your stadium location. Upon receipt of your message, an Event Services team member and/or law enforcement personnel will assist when necessary.

I know I’ll be in the minority on this, but I think this is a bad idea. Plenty of idiots out there who will ruin this (and the game experience) for everyone. Definitely will bring in tons of money, though.
Hasn’t seemed to be the case elsewhere although I understand the sentiment.

The ones who would wreak the most havoc (the college kids) aren’t gonna stand around to buy a $10 coors light when they already brought their flask in.

Agreed. The people who are hammered and wreaking havoc are already that way when they come in. And if they weren't - the flask they've got on them will get them there.

This is a fantastic, long overdue change. Grab a couple beers, watch the game, sounds like a great Saturday.

The price will be out of reach to the students anyway. As long as there aren't a bunch of Mexicans there, it'll be fine.

I am on board with the change and happy they are doing it. However, the quotes from Barta and Keller are laughable. Many are not stupid enough to believe them.

Really though, we should just dial it up to 11 this year in Kinnick. Pure debauchery. Stock the bathrooms with condoms, turn the changing boards into ****ing-tables. Waitresses with jello-shots roaming the stands. Llamas and molly. Pony rides for the kids. (maybe Llama rides -- yes, **** it, Llama rides for all the kids) The whole nine yards. Makes perfect sense after the pandemic.

I'm sure the planes pretty much fly themselves, but shouldn't they limit this to Only Fans?

Most college stadiums have seen a decrease in alcohol related incidents and arrests once they start selling alcohol.

The need to binge right before entering to ‘keep the buzz’ isn’t necessary since it’s available inside. Once there the price, lines, security and the servers themselves prevent people from going overboard. Sales are limited to two per person and are stopped at the beginning of the 4th quarter, if not halfway through the 3rd.

This will not be a big deal.

I might need to tailgate with you!

I don’t agree or disagree really, but I will just add that for those who want to drink at an Iowa football game are already doing so whether it’s legal or not.

If you walk the aisles after a game, you’ll find all kinds of empties from tall boys to hard liquor. Maybe selling it legally inside will curb some of the hard liquor being brought in. Probably not, IDK.

I’m not much of a drinker myself. A few games a year we’ll stop at a tailgate before and I’ll have a few, but that’s about the craziest I get. Besides the hour drive home, I don’t like waiting for the pisser for 30 minutes and miss a majority of the game.

You forgot the horizontal mirrors for snorting lines but everything else seems good.

Side comment: And what pigs people are: Somehow, they got all that stuff in, but can’t dispose of it properly?

I fully support this decision. However this made me laugh:

I'm pretty damn sure we all know the consequences of "high-risk drinking and the related harmful consequences" in 2021.

What a waste of "research" money. Might as well give the money to research on the harmful consequences of huffing paint thinner and banging OP's mom.

I've always wanted to go to a game on molly. That's a good idea.
