Well after an exciting year last season, it's time to begin the 2016 version. Iowa will play a three game set @ Dallas Baptist who won 46 games last year. It is DBU's only D1 program.

Friday 6:30pm - Tyler Peyton
Saturday 2:00pm - Nick Gallagher
Sunday 1:00pm - Calvin Mathews

Iowa is facing two lefties this weekend, one on Friday and one on Sunday. The Friday starter went 3-0 and posted a 1.37 ERA in 2014 for Arkansas. The other two starters had under 3 ERA's, one was at a juco though.

Very tough series, going to learn a lot about Iowa and find out where we are at and/or how much room we have to improve.

DBU's head coach Dan Heefner played at Iowa City West and was an assistant under Heller at UNI in 2002 and 2003. Their assistant coach Dan Fitzgerald was previously head coach at DMACC.

Excited to see another season of Hellerball. Really want to make it out to IC for a few games. Interested to see what McCoy brings to the lineup. Sounds like he had a great fall.

Iowa loses to Dallas Baptist 5-1. Hopefully this one game is not a sign of what we see this year.

Tyler Peyton pitched well tonight for Iowa, it was enough to win. Iowa's offense was very lackluster to say the least as Iowa only had three hits. Defense was a problem as well, Iowa had three errors tonight which led to eventual runs along with a passed ball. All of DBU's runs were unearned.

Peyton went 6 1/3 allowed two hits, one walk, and had six K's. Two unearned runs as well. He also had a throwing error on a pick off.

Ryan Erickson struggled tonight and hopefully he gets it going. He was a huge part of the bullpen last year. Erickson went 1/3 of an inning, allowed two hits, one walk, three unearned runs.

Luke Vandermaten 1/3 inning, one hit

Nick Allgeyer threw the last inning, no hits, no runs, one K

Offensively...
-Mason McCoy's first hit was a double. He was 1-3
-Daniel Moriel was 1-2 with a solo HR in the 7th
-Corbin Woods was 1-3 with an infield single

Iowa had opportunities to make something happen. Iowa was walked six times and was 0-8 with runners in scoring position tonight. I think we will see lineup changes before we get to B1G play. We need someone in the cleanup spot than can make those big hits.

Peyton gets the loss.

Nick Gallagher going on Saturday for Iowa, be interesting to see what he has. Nobody said this series would be easy, but Iowa had a shot tonight. Iowa did lose their first game of the year last year.

Everyone looked like they were swinging out of their shorts. Just put bat on ball!

Iowa loses game two 7-3.

It's obvious right away this is not last years team, they still have time to turn it around though obviously.

Nick Gallagher struggled right out of the gate as he went 1 1/3 innings, giving up five hits, five runs (four earned), and three walks. He gave up a grand slam in the 1st after loading the bases with a couple hits and a walk.

CJ Eldred threw four innings giving up two hits, two runs (one earned), and had three K's.

Zach Daniels threw a scoreless inning.

Iowa has now given up seven unearned runs in the first two games.

Offensively...

Corbin Woods was 1-3 with a solo HR
Moriel was 1-4 with an RBI
Schenck-Joblinske was 1-4 with an RBI

Iowa tries to avoid the sweep with Calvin Mathews on Sunday. Definitely do not want to start 0-3, always good to get the first W plus a win on the road vs DBU helps the RPI.

Went to both games and Iowa will be ok this year. First DBU is really good with a first class facility. Their first two starters were both tough and their closer came in the first game and threw in the low to mid 90's with a good breaking ball. If Iowa just starts to play better defense they will be in games. Peyton pitched really well and just missed hitting a home run to left field. His throwing error to first base on a pick off move (had the guy with a good throw) was big and ended up costing a run after a passed ball and a sacrifice fly. After evening the score 1-1, Iowa dropped a ball at first base (not a great throw but you have to make the play) which would have gotten them out of the inning. DBU went on to score four more runs that inning and held on to a 5-1 win.

Second game Iowa fell behind early but battled back to make it 5-3 before the bullpen let them down. Eldred looked good and the freshmen right fielder Neustrom should settle in the four hole as the year goes. I was really impressed with McCoy at second base and Woods made a couple of nice plays at third and hit a home run in the second game. No reason to panic even if Iowa gets swept. DBU is a top-notch program and they have some big arms. Kid pitching today was 10-4 last year with a 2.09 ERA.

A 3 game series vs a good Southern team at their place is a tough way to start the season. Would rather do one of the tournaments with some Northern teams mixed in, then work somebody like DBU in later. Hoping for a bounce back next weekend.

I noticed Cole McDonald pitched when showing highlights of yesterday's game. How did he look?

He looked promising. Looks like he has good stuff and didn't seem overwhelmed by the moment. Iowa has some good looking young talent. Zach Daniels pitched on Saturday and looked good. He was noticeably nervous while warming up. His first four or five pitches went about 55 feet. Sitting right next to the Iowa dugout and there were some raised eyebrows. Next couple were ok and when a batter stepped in the box his control was good.
