The Iowa baseball team will be the United States’ representative for the World University Games held in Taipei, Taiwan, next year.
The games, which run Aug. 19-30, 2017, are a multi-sport competition open to men and women between the ages of 17 and 24, who have been, within the past year, a college student. The Hawkeyes were selected from a number of schools that expressed interest.
The complete field will be set in February and could include up to 12 teams, which will be divided into two groups to compete in round-robin play. The best two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals, then the eventual championship and third-place game.
In a school release, Iowa baseball coach Rick Heller called the selection a “once in a lifetime opportunity for our student-athletes, staff, and the University of Iowa.”
