The Iowa City Police Department has asked for the public’s help investigating a fatal shooting early Monday morning.

Police responded to a report of shots fired at 2:38 a.m. Monday in the 600 Block of S. Dodge Street, where they found a female shooting victim, according to a press release from the police department.

The victim was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Her name has not been released pending notification of family, the release states.

Police asked that anyone with information about the incident, or anyone with security cameras in the area, contact the department at 319-356-5275 or Iowa City Area Crime Stoppers at 319-358-8477. Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest.

So, on the street or in a parking lot for one of the crappy apartment buildings down there?
Still pretty scary, that area back in the day was all students and the last thing you would have been thinking about when stumbling around drunk @ 2AM was that somebody might have a gun that they were gonna use.

I would think that the majority of people living in that area are still students, but Iowa City has changed.

No doubt, I lived a half a block from the murder scene one year, and two blocks over on Johnson for another year. I could have been rolled a few times staggering back from Fitzpatrick's, the Vine, or downtown.
My guess is this was a domestic incident.

I lived in the 400 block of S Lucas (just a couple blocks away) as late as the early 90's. I still bike through that area probably at least once a week during the warmer months for old times sake, but things have changed.

The victim in Monday's shooting has been identified as Christine Blount, 38, of Iowa City.

Iowa City police officers responded to a report of shots fired at 2:38 a.m. in the 600 Block of South Dodge Street, near Oak Grove Park. The shooting took place roughly half a mile from the Pedmall in downtown Iowa City.

Royceann Porter, former Johnson County Supervisor and owner of Royceann's Soul Food, shared a Facebook tribute to Blount, who also was known as "Gucci" by friends, family, and community members.

"My heart is heavy today. Yesterday, our community suffered an unthinkable loss. Christine Blount (Gucci), a beloved Black woman, was tragically taken from us," Porter wrote in the post.

Porter urged local police to "do everything in your power to bring justice for Christine and her family."

"We need justice for Christine. We need justice for her children and grandchildren. We need support for her family," Porter continued. "We need to protect and serve our neighborhoods while continuing the hard work of reform and equity. Let us come together to demand justice for Christine. Let us support her family as they navigate this unimaginable pain. Let us continue to fight for a community where every life is valued, protected, and respected."

Porter told the Press-Citizen she met Blount when she moved to Iowa City in 2013. At the time, Porter was working as a case manager at Shelter House and helped Blount get settled into her first apartment in Iowa City after coming from Chicago with her six children.

Blount went on to work at Shelter House herself.

"I've been knowing her for so long and I was proud of the change she had made in her life," Porter said. "Christine was tragically murdered outside of her own home, a place where every person should feel safe."

Gucci?
Grandchildren?
She’s been knowing her?

I liked living in those crappy apartments in the alley off Bowery and Dodge. Pretty easy walk from the Club Car and Jobsite. Falbos was a nice pit stop from downtown.

Friend's dad owned a few of them so nearly a dozen friends from high school were in that alley.
