Iowa City West vs Newton

IAHSAA has to go to a shot clock. These games are meant to be up tempo and there is just slow moving offenses. I realize the players might be tentative (first game at state). But dang these games are very slow moving. Put in a 35-40 second shot clock.

I'm blocked from streaming this, update?
C. McCaffery just missed two free throws with a minute left up 3, Newton made an acrobatic shot at the other end to cut it to one, fouled Lane, who made 1/2 to make it a 2 pt game with 40 seconds left

CM fouled again, makes 1/2 for a three point game, then West fouled Newton with 16 seconds left. Newton missed the 1-1 and West heading back to the line up 3 with 12 seconds left

Patrick fouls out with only 2 FT on the game. Connor splits another pair of FT. West will survive this one

I've only seen McCaffery play in the state tournament last year and was extremely underwhelmed. Sounds like he was less than impressive again today.

Small sample size and different dynamic that what he plays in AAU. How will it carry over to college, who knows. Maybe he doesn't even play basketball in college and plays baseball.

After hearing about him from a buddy of mine who coaches he will underwhelm you if you have only seen him play 1-2 times.

He is not the most athletic player on the court. He is very confident in his game and he will not hurt you in terms of turnovers. He is very court savey and plays within in himself. My buddy said he wouldn't be surprised to see connor have the type of career of Bryce Alford. He said that meaning, "he will struggle and take his lumps" early on his career, but he has the shooting stroke and if he works hard it will come. Said by his junior/senior year could be a great player for Iowa.

This guy also said Gatens was one of the better players to come out of Iowa and his description of Weiskamp is crazy. Said he might be the "BEST" player to come out of Iowa ever.

Same. Saw him last year against Hoover. He has good size for a guard but I'm not really sure what he's going to be able to add to a team. Now this is based off one game, but he didn't seem to be very quick. I'm guessing he will have trouble guarding quicker players in college. His shot was also very slow, he's going to have to be wide open to get that shot off in college. I'm guessing he's a pretty good passer, but it was hard to tell since there was no shot clock and teams were just sitting on the ball. Anyone else have any input that has seen him more than once? Strenths/weaknesses?

Teams try to slow down ICW because there's no shot clock

HS =/= AAU

I don't think Connor will be a game changer but I think he'll prove to be serviceable when surrounded by other elite players.

Money and logistics, getting shot clocks installed at however many hundreds of gyms across the state.
Exactly. Games are only 32 minutes now so even a slow down game doesn't get drug out that long. You might not like that style of play, but if a team can be disciplined enough at that level to play in that manner let them. Don't need to create the NBA at the high school level.

The IHSAA & IGHSAU is really doing a disservice to our high school athletes by not implementing the shot clock into HS basketball. I think most HS athletic booster clubs could dig up the money to make it happen, but the truth of the matter is the fat cats that run those athletic oversight organizations DGAF.

If you went to something like a 35-40 second shot clock it would allow for plenty of ball movement while still requiring teams to actually do something and not just sit on the ball. It would not be creating the NBA. I'd even go for a 45-second clock.

I can see Connor being a smaller version of Pemsl. Very high basketball IQ, and very court aware. Not an explosive athlete, but knows how to use what he has. I think he helps next year, and becomes a very solid player down the road.

Quick google search says $2k-$7k for shot clocks. Do all schools have play clocks for football now?

NO! Most smaller schools barely have working scoreboard! Nothing against smaller schools but back to original post, shot clocks need someone at scorers table to know how to use them and cost way to much money!

In high school yes. Deal with never getting one. :)

Not having a shot clock is the great equalizer. A lesser team can hang in with a better team by slowing the game to a crawl. There is a reason that the NCAA banned the "four corner offense" by instituting the shot clock. Without it, some games are unwatchable. Should have it in HS too IMHO.

add 40 second shot clock for playoffs, then you don't have to equip every gym and eliminate stall ball as way to get to state title.

I saw Connor was 42% from 3pt and 80%+ from FT line. Statistically he is a good shooter, but the slow release is a big concern if true.

Shouldn't forget that Conner is a Rivals top 150 player. I've heard enough on here about how rankings matter.

Let's see.........how about the Hoops gurus, here in Iowa's take on Jordan Bohannon, last year. LOL
Connor will be fine. But, it will be tough for him to be as solid, early as
Jordan Bo.

GO HAWKS :)
