According to the announcers, when a team like Minnesota plays man to man pass coverage it opens up opportunity for the QB and running backs to make long runs as their back is turned. The man to man coverage makes it much harder for the quarterback to spot an open receiver. Iowa used a different strategy, to have zone pass defense which allowed Leidner to spot open receivers, but it kept Leidner from making those breakout runs he has had all season. Our breakdown did not come from our defensive backs who have played well all season, but we had no pass rush. The lack of pass rush could have been caused by instructions to the defensive ends to contain the quarterback from breaking out outside. Hope the Purdue quarterback does not get as hot as Leidner was.
