If you could make up a team of Iowa wrestlers from anytime, who would be in which weight class?
125: McDonough
133: RAMOS!!!!!
141: Clark (Make him gain weight)
149: Metcalf
157: Saint John
165: Meyer (Make him lose weight)
174: Evans
184: Brooks
197: Burak
285: Stoll or Telford

ummm...no! given the one hour weigh-ins...

125- Barry Davis
133- Terry Brands
141: Randy Lewis or Tom Brands or Mark Ironside take your pick
149 Lincoln McIlravy or Jim Heffernan
157 TJ Williams or Chuck Yagla
165 Jim Zalesky or Marty Kistler take your pick
174 Joe Williams or Royce Alger
184 Chris Campbell
197 Ed Banach
285 Steve Mocco or Lou Banach take your pick

The team I just named would probably skunk your team, Thunderstrike.

Off the top of my head.

134 Brands (pick one)
141 Lincoln
149 TJ Williams - Metcalf
157 Jimmy Z - TJ Williams

I'll play! I'll even go 2 deep at each weight.

125-Barry Davis/Terry Brands
133-Tom Brands/Randy Lewis
141-Mark Ironside/Jeff McGinness
149-Lincoln McIlravy/Brent Metcalf
157-Jim Zalesky/TJ Williams
165-Joe Williams/Mark Perry
174-Royce Alger/Rico Chiparelli
184-Chris Campbell/Pete Bush
197-Ed Banach/Duane Goldman
HWT-Lou Banach/Steve Mocco

That's leaving guys like Penrith, Heffernan, Kistler, Jurgens, McDonough, Borschel, etc off the list... Love doing stuff like this and makes for great conversations/debates!

I think this has been covered, but just because I can't let Thunderstrike go unchecked, I'll throw out:
125: B Davis (3x)
133: Tom Brands (3x)
141: McGinness (2x)
149: McIlravy (3x)
157: Zalesky (3x)
165: J Williams (3x)
177: R Alger (2x)
190: E Banach (3x)
Hwt: L Banach (2x)

Of course, that leaves Terry Brands, McD, Lewis, Metcalf, Yagla, Kistler, Campbell, and a few other 2xers on the B team. Hey, you get what you earn.

The real question is: which would you rather see? A 126 bracket featuring Davis, Penrith, Terry Brands, Tom Brands, Lewis, McGinnis, and Schwab...or a 167 bracket featuring Kistler, Alger, Joe Williams, Perry, and Reiland?

ummm...no! given the one hour weigh-ins...

125- Barry Davis
133- Terry Brands
141: Randy Lewis or Tom Brands or Mark Ironside take your pick
149 Brent Metcalf gets the nod here based on career
157 Lincoln McIlravy
165 Jim Zalesky or TJ Williams take your pick
174 Joe Williams
184 Chris Campbell
197 Ed Banach
285 Steve Mocco or Lou Banach take your pick

The team I just named would almost skunk your team, Thunderstrike.
Seems good but are you discounting McD's sr year , I would evaluate pre injury. Not an expert on Iowa wrestling but from what I saw of McD hard to imagine someone tougher but as I said never saw Davis wrestle but interested others who saw both. Maybe I overestimate McD due to the way he handled Nico

Awesome list.....brings back some great memories for me!!

Berry was an Olympic silver medalist in college. I do like McD but not a close call.

Lots of great names, mostly multiple title guys mentioned, but so many other great wrestlers over the years such as the Steiner brothers or the Zadicks, Fullhart, etc. Many others so close to multiple titles or hampered by injury.

Man Tarp, not even a single Ironside mention in your post. I like your list but he's one of the few 4x Big10 champs, I'd have to put him in the lineup over McGinness. FWIW, Daryl Weber should be honorary team captain. Dude would do whatever it took to make the lineup.

Depends...if they had 1980s stall calls or 2010 stall calls
A couple years after they made nearfall a 2 count I remember tilting a guy for a one count a few times then held him at 90 degrees for another 10 seconds or so. When I bellied him back out the ref called me for stalling. The 80's were different.

Not to be picky, but most listed here would come close to making the weights they are listed at.
Barry Davis would never have seen 125 with a two hour weigh in after his first title. The old days had morning of or night before or "call in" weigh ins.

McIlravy at 141 with a two hour weigh in?

Unless we are just going put people at weights without any consideration to reality.
I would put Randy Lewis at 125!

But reality, using their last year's weights.

125 Matt McDonough
133 Terry Brands or Eric Juergens
141 Tom Brandsu or Randy Lewis
149 Brent Metcalf or Troy Steiner
157 Lincoln MacIlravy
165 Jim Zale sky
174 Joe Williams
184 Royce Algers or Chris Campbell
197 Ed Banach
HWT Lou Banach

I hit a granby on a guy and was in a peterson finish waiting for the ref to give me my swipes...I had pretty good control over the guy and was looking at the ref waiting...he wouldn't count. I look at my coach who is yelling at the guy and then I was like, why aren't you counting!!? He blows the whistle, gives me a stall call and deducts a penalty point for talking at him during the match. My coach is about to blow a gasket and they meet at the table. Ref said I didn't have control because I wasn't "facing him" and was milking the clock. Even the opposing coach was like "O.K. dude, here's the deal..." The 1980s.

you guys know thunder prob 11 or 12, be nice

Or it could just be another one of Tarp's alias so he could start a thread acting liker a newby with a silly list and jump in later to make himself look smart with a real answer.

Wish I could like this post twice.

Who's got Mac at '41?? And why is the first half of your line up current weights and the second half the old ones???

A question I asked after Friday's match: What would we have thought if Barry Davis, Chad Zaputil or Terry Brands had taken 1 shot against a true freshman, even one ranked #3 and undefeated? I like Thomas, but some of us were spoiled in the '70s, '80s and 90's. Heck, I'm betting Tarp would have taken more shots.

Of course Tarp would have...His Grandma was a Ninja.

To give some serious thought GG, wrestling fans in general were more spoiled because there was more action because refs would call you if you didn't. If you are not a total dominator AKA Nolf or Metcalf, you can expend a lot of energy taking shots on a guy who will not get called more than once in a match and conserves by wrestling defensively or keeping you at arm's length.

Not saying it was like it in this match but Suriano is a tough defensive wrestler...did not get scored on at all in high school. Not saying that Gilman shouldn't have had more attempts, especially since he scored pretty easily on his only real attempt, but Suriano was closed off in the match...a lot of circling and head slaps until the last minute or so. I don't really think the "true freshman" comparison really matters any more...especially at 125. McD (RS) and Long (true) both beat multiple upper classmen on the way to the finals in 2010. McD met another true freshman in the finals in Nico. I think we could have Spencer Lee and Daton Fix come into the NCAAs this year as high school seniors and give everybody a run for their money.

I am getting old, started with new weights, then for whatever reason I switched.
Near fall at 4:19 had Lincoln at 141.
That's because Lincoln won a national title at 142. Having Lincoln at 141 lets TJ in at 149. TJ has the highest winning percentage of any Hawkeye. They both really need to be on the team.

Not to be picky, but Barry would have had donuts to spare to make 125 pounds. He was the national champ at 118.

Now I don't know about that, he would've struggled to make 125 on an hour weigh in. He would've made it and dominated (he would've mauled Gilman)

You might be right about the skunking. But holy shit what I would pay to have seen Mcilravey and Metcalf go a best of three in their prime. :)
