Iowa Dream Team

To give some serious thought GG, wrestling fans in general were more spoiled because there was more action because refs would call you if you didn't. If you are not a total dominator AKA Nolf or Metcalf, you can expend a lot of energy taking shots on a guy who will not get called more than once in a match and conserves by wrestling defensively or keeping you at arm's length.

Not saying it was like it in this match but Suriano is a tough defensive wrestler...did not get scored on at all in high school. Not saying that Gilman shouldn't have had more attempts, especially since he scored pretty easily on his only real attempt, but Suriano was closed off in the match...a lot of circling and head slaps until the last minute or so. I don't really think the "true freshman" comparison really matters any more...especially at 125. McD (RS) and Long (true) both beat multiple upper classmen on the way to the finals in 2010. McD met another true freshman in the finals in Nico. I think we could have Spencer Lee and Daton Fix come into the NCAAs this year as high school seniors and give everybody a run for their money.

If Suriano was training with Gilman & TnT instead of Nico would Suriano be better yet?

Several people have to be on the list. Randy Lewis, Barry Sanders, and both Banachs. Lewis may have been our all time best except for his injury in last year. Lou would have destroyed any hot that ever wrestled for Iowa including Mocco. If you have any question about Lou, look up U tube video with Banach vs Baumgartner in 1981 NCAA final. That was the best Hwt wrestling match ever. If you haven't seen that match you have missed something great. Baumgartner was considered the all time best American Hwt wrestler, but he could not beat Lou Banach in college or while training for the olympics even though he out weighed Lou by 60-70 lbs.
By the way, I have watched that video at least 10 times. It gets better every time I watch it.

Lou Bananch was gutty and relentless. In 1980 he got ridden for 4 plus minutes by Iowa State's John Forshee (at 190 pounds). During this period Lou got to feet over 20 times until Forshee wore himself out throwing Lou back to the mat. Banach finally reversed and pinned the exhausted Forshee. I have this match on tape and it's like the the Paul Newman/George Kenndy fight in Cool Hand Luke - awesome guts.

It would take a hell of a career to overtake Barry Davis for the 125 spot. Davis went 7,1,1,1 with an Olympic Silver sprinkled in there....
Davis was a complete stud and would probably take the spot at our lightest weight, but McD is in the discussion. He finished 1,2,1, INJ. Had he seen Robles prior to the finals or had Robles not been a 149 lbs upper body guy, does anyone doubt McD is not standing as 1,1,1 his first three years. Then we all know what happened in year 4, if he's healthy he probably goes on to be our (tied for) highest rating wrestler ever 1,2,1,1??

I know this asking for a lot of "if/then" lee-way , but since it's a dream team, might as well throw it in.

ALSO don't forget the lost season of Metcalf, give him the 4th year he deserves and how close is he to filling 149?

to get a real debate going, how about the All-Time college wrestling team. Covering any wrestler from any school at each weight... I wouldn't even know where to start...

A question I asked after Friday's match: What would we have thought if Barry Davis, Chad Zaputil or Terry Brands had taken 1 shot against a true freshman, even one ranked #3 and undefeated? I like Thomas, but some of us were spoiled in the '70s, '80s and 90's. Heck, I'm betting Tarp would have taken more shots.
Agree 100%. Unless I missed it, I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion about this. I was probably more disappointed in Gilman's performance than most of the guys that lost. He wrestled not to lose it appeared to me (Boooooooooo!). This was teach a lesson time and he failed miserably, IMO.

If Dan Gable or me are Coaching Gilman during this match, especially the 3rd period, I would be giving the Ref. one of these (see pic), and I'd be mentioning Gilman's name while doing it (love T.G., but he did not "bring it" in this match, which was disappointing to me, but your opinion may differ).

Winning the 149lb bracket in 2008 alone gives Metcalf street cred. Seriously, go back and look at that thing. Bubba, Burroughs, Schlatter, Churella, etc...

Put Lincoln at 125, he would have had as good a chance at making 125 with a 2 hour weigh in as making 141.
He made 142 with morning and night before weigh ins.
Way different.

My best lineup for former hawks.

125 - Randy Lewis
133 - Chuck Yagla
141 - Jimmy Zalesky
149 - Joe Williams
157 - Royse Algers
165 - Chris Campbell
174 - Ed Banach
184 - Lou Banach
197 - Steve Mocco
HWT - Forfeit, as this team would only need 9 weight classes.

That's because Lincoln won a national title at 142. Having Lincoln at 141 lets TJ in at 149. TJ has the highest winning percentage of any Hawkeye. They both really need to be on the team.

Come on. At least I had a reason for my pick.

Lou WAS amazing! Big Bruce did stick Lou that year at the Midlands, however. Turnabout was fair play.

Lewis wins in a head to head with Tom Brands...the record speaks for itself. You can say that Brands was young, but he was ~ 20 years old at the time. Lewis had already been in the NCAA finals twice, stuck a Senior World Champ within one year of wrestling him ( Tomiyama) by the time he was twenty. Even with his losses due to injury, you have to rate Lewis on top.

Barry Sanders, no doubt, was a good backyard wrestler, but he would have had a tough time come Big Tens

Could you PLEASE post this video to Youtube for posterity purposes? Or send me a copy and I will post it.
