It wasn’t out of the ordinary to see so much Iowa black and gold downtown before Friday’s game.
What was surprising was the amount that found its way into the stadium.
Memorial Stadium, which will always be dominated by red, had more opponent colors than in recent memory.
One Iowa fan had a close enough seat to hold an Iowa flag just above the tunnel before the Tunnel Walk. The HuskerVision cameras didn’t pick it up, but it foreshadowed how the game played out.
There was a very loud “I-O-W-A” chant that echoed through the concourse after Jordan Canzeri’s 29-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.
When Canzeri scored on a 68-yard run on the first play after Imani Cross’ second touchdown of the game, Iowa fans breathed a sigh of relief.
“We really needed that,” one said. Another replied with “Yeah, I was starting to get a little nervous there.”
There were enough Hawkeye fans to light up Memorial Stadium during the break before the fourth quarter.
What started out as a whim last week at Kinnick Stadium for Iowa fans to hold up their phones between the third and fourth quarters carried over to Lincoln, lighting up Memorial Stadium like fireflies glowing over the sea of red.
It was spur of the moment to turn on the flashlight app and hold up phones last week in Iowa City when “Hypnotize” by Notorious B.I.G. was played in the stadium. After Friday's win in Lincoln, it’s a new tradition that could be here to stay.
While they may have been panicked at times, Iowa fans came to Lincoln and saw their team get a win. They left with multiple handshakes from Nebraska fans and their sights on a Big Ten championship.
The visiting team has won the last four meetings in this rivalry, with both teams able to call the other's turf a second home.
Maybe, starting next season, both teams should wear their home uniforms. It would bring an extra flavor to the rivalry.
