Sideline chatter: Hawkeye fans light up Memorial Stadium

It wasn’t out of the ordinary to see so much Iowa black and gold downtown before Friday’s game.

What was surprising was the amount that found its way into the stadium.

Memorial Stadium, which will always be dominated by red, had more opponent colors than in recent memory.

One Iowa fan had a close enough seat to hold an Iowa flag just above the tunnel before the Tunnel Walk. The HuskerVision cameras didn’t pick it up, but it foreshadowed how the game played out.

There was a very loud “I-O-W-A” chant that echoed through the concourse after Jordan Canzeri’s 29-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.

When Canzeri scored on a 68-yard run on the first play after Imani Cross’ second touchdown of the game, Iowa fans breathed a sigh of relief.

“We really needed that,” one said. Another replied with “Yeah, I was starting to get a little nervous there.”

There were enough Hawkeye fans to light up Memorial Stadium during the break before the fourth quarter.

What started out as a whim last week at Kinnick Stadium for Iowa fans to hold up their phones between the third and fourth quarters carried over to Lincoln, lighting up Memorial Stadium like fireflies glowing over the sea of red.

It was spur of the moment to turn on the flashlight app and hold up phones last week in Iowa City when “Hypnotize” by Notorious B.I.G. was played in the stadium. After Friday's win in Lincoln, it’s a new tradition that could be here to stay.

While they may have been panicked at times, Iowa fans came to Lincoln and saw their team get a win. They left with multiple handshakes from Nebraska fans and their sights on a Big Ten championship.

The visiting team has won the last four meetings in this rivalry, with both teams able to call the other's turf a second home.

Maybe, starting next season, both teams should wear their home uniforms. It would bring an extra flavor to the rivalry.

Wow, the light thing was Iowa fans? Saw it on the game feed and assumed that was a Husker deal. Pretty cool if it was us.

They showed a wide stadium shot on the ESPN3 feed and there really looked to be very little black and gold noticeable in the crowd.

It was definitely us, I thought Nebraska was doing their own light show, but it was clearly the Hawkeye fans once they started panning the cameras around.

I still think Iowa's strongest showing in Lincoln was the first Big Ten meeting in 2011. By quite a bit actually.

Seemed like a lot more Hawks walking the street than actually made it to the stadium. Based on what I could see, I'd guess out of the 90k total, about 8k were Hawks. Plenty loud though.

From my vantage point in the southwest end zone Hawk fans were most concentrated where we were and in the northeast end zone. However hawk fans were also dispersed everywhere else.

Yes they were, we were in the north endzone, 60 rows up. There were 2-3 other around us. Various other areas like this all around the stadium with 5-10 sprinkled in among Husker fans.

I was in the north end zone as well and there were quite a few hawk fans sprinkled throughout. I've been to the last 3 games in Memorial Stadium and we've had a good showing all 3 years. Yesterday I think we had the most I've seen in that stadium. And hawk fans made some noise yesterday.
Next time, I gotta find my way into that southwest section. Sucks being in the north end zone when the game is over and everything happens on the opposite end of the field with the team.

Yep I've been to all 3 as well and my buddy has season tickets in NE section so stuck there but I'll take it!

Gotta do the light show in Indianapolis. Make it a great Hawkeye tradition.
Does anyone have a picture, I missed it during the game. What is the signal to turn on the flashlight?

Don't know for sure if it started out here in Orange County, but Angels fans have been doing the "light rally" in about the 6th inning at most home games. May have been happening for about 3 years or so.

The huddle DJ asked fans to do it before the fourth quarter. There may have been 1000 fans at the huddle but I'd guess there were close to 10,000 Hawkeyes in the stadium so I'm not sure how it spread so fast. It was really cool though. There were big pockets of fans but it highlighted all of the ones who were sprinkled across both sideline stands.

There appeared to be a main bulk of Hawk fans placed towards the top corner of one of the endzones (that, I think, is where the phone stunt started from). The rest of our fans, I'm assuming, were scattered throughout the stadium.
