Iowa Field Hockey

Saw today they beat Michigan to win a share of the B1G title.
Congrats! I believe it's been a while that Iowa field hockey won a Big Ten regular season or tournament championship. With the addition of Maryland, the conference has become even more competitive. Rutgers is a pretty good team too.

#2 Iowa beat #7 Ohio State 4:1 in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament. Will play the winner of #3 Northwestern vs. #6 Rutgers tomorrow. #5 Penn State upset #4 Michigan 2:1 in the first game of the day. #1 Maryland is idle.

Iowa is playing Northwestern tonight at 6:30 in the semifinals. Northwestern beat Rutgers 3:1 yesterday.

Penn State upset Maryland 1:0 in the other semifinal today, and Iowa's game got postponed to Sunday morning at 11am ET. If Iowa wins, they'll have to play host Penn State right away at 2pm ET in the final. Think about the advantages that Penn State has! I hope Iowa is strong enough to win both games. They did win at Penn State during the regular season 4:1.

Hawkeyesports.com reports that the postponement was due to frozen field.

Iowa will play Duke on Friday in the NCAA tournament. The winner will likely play at #1 North Carolina for a Final Four berth. Big Ten has four teams in the tournament, Maryland, Iowa, Northwestern and Michigan. There are a total of 18 teams.

Iowa lost to Duke 2-1 in OT this year. Also lost 2-1 to UNC.

It seems like Iowa got screwed big time on the seeds, they won Big Ten regular season (shared) & tournament titles and they get to play Duke in North Carolina and then if they win they probably play #1 seed North Carolina. 3 other Big Tens teams made it and they all possibly play the #3 or #4 seeds.

I watched a little of the replay on YouTube. In the final seconds of the game, when Duke moved every player forward, desperately trying to tie the score, Iowa missed a shot to their empty goal. But anyway, Iowa won!

They did get screwed, probably because they are on an island in Iowa. Lower ranked B1G teams got to play lower seeds because they were close to the host school. Great Round 1 win, but now have to play the best team in the country, by far.

Iowa lost to Michigan 3 - 2 in the Big Ten tournament semifinals. Michigan beat Northwestern 3 - 2 in OT yesterday to get to the semifinals. Iowa had a bye. We'll see how the NCAA tournament seedings go. Iowa may not get the top seed any more. Also it feels that 6 teams from Big Ten deserve to go, out of 18 slots in total.

The NCAA tournament bracket has been announced:

2021 NCAA D1 Field Hockey Tournament Bracket

Big Ten did get 6 teams into the tournament. There are 10 automatic bids and 8 at large. Big Ten gets 5 at large and ACC gets the other 3. Top four seeds are the four semifinalists in the Big Ten tournament and get to host the first two rounds of games, Rutgers is the Big Ten tourney champs and gets #1, Iowa is #2, Michigan #3, and Penn State #4. Maryland and Northwestern are also in. North Carolina, Louisville, Syracuse and Virginia are the ACC teams.

If Iowa beats American in the first round, it will play either North Carolina or Northwestern. Iowa already beat UNC at home this season but UNC is the depending national champions. Northwestern is the team that prevented Iowa from going undefeated in the regular season. This Sunday at 12 is the second round game at Grant Field. I don't expect Iowa to have trouble in the first round game on Friday at 12.

I don't know if the selection committee did it on purpose, but if the four seeded Big Ten teams all make it to the semifinals, it will be the Big Ten tournament all over again, Iowa vs Michigan and Rutgers vs Penn State. Redemption time for Iowa and Penn State?

Iowa beat American 3:2 to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament, and will face the winner of Northwestern vs. North Carolina. Earlier, Rutgers beat Delaware 2:1, and Penn State lost at home to Syracuse. Michigan trailed Miami of Ohio for most of the game, but tied the game with a minute left, and won the game with a goal at 2 seconds! Final score 3:2.

Elite Eight, baby! This game felt rough, but Michigan having to gut it out even more, and PSU not surviving makes me feel better. Really want a crack at Northwestern again. Talk about a match our Hawks will be up for.

Northwestern beat North Carolina 2:0. Maryland beat Virginia 2:1. Harvard beat Louisville 1:0 in OT. 5 Big Ten teams advanced to Elite Eight. Only ACC team that survived is Syracuse. It can still be an all Big Ten Final Four, just it will be Maryland in place of Penn State.

Iowa couldn't revenge the regular season loss to Northwestern, thus won't have a chance to revenge the Big Ten tourney loss to Michigan either.

Rutgers lost in a shootout to Liberty. Northwestern appears to be the best team so far.

Michigan lost in a shootout to Harvard. So the four #1 teams in the season all failed to make it to the Final Four, North Carolina, Michigan, Iowa and Rutgers. Big Ten needs to set up a shootout workshop in the off season. The shootout between Iowa and Michigan was pretty ugly too.

The top 4 seeds in the tournament all lost. They were all Big Ten teams. However, there are still two Big Ten teams that made the Final Four -- the two that didn't make the conference tournament's semifinals. Hope one of them will win the national championship. Will the Big Ten be this competitive again next year?
