No. Iowa's good for a dream season run about once every 10-15 years.
1. You played a TREMENDOUSLY WEAK schedule last year.
2. You finish each year with an embarrassingly mediocre recruiting rank. 50th in the country is a joke.
3. You're still Iowa, and Capt Happy Pants is still your head coach.
You'll quickly come back to reality, which will be followed by the grumblings to fire Kirk (I can hear it already, and I've seen it all before).
Gopher Dano,
Against better judgement, I am gonna respond to this.
As a previous poster iterated, KF and the Hawkeyes have finished in the top ten nationally in the final poll 5 times in 15 years. Finishing that well 1/3 of the time, on average, in a career is pretty good I'd say.
Two Outlands, one Davey O'brien, one Mackey, one Doak Walker, one Thorpe, and one AP National player of the year, and one Heisman runner-up. Those are just the national awards, and off the top of my head. Never mind how many 1st team all Big Ten and All American selections.
Then there's the first round draft picks, all-pros, Bob Sanders NFL Defensive Player of The Year, Marshall Yanda top Offensive Lineman, and just the raw number of NFL players from Iowa playing and starting in the NFL.
Then there is the personal. Name me a coach who demands more respect, on the field and off, as Kirk Ferentz. Iowa is fortunate to have him, and even more fortunate that even though he has undoubtedly had offers from the NFL and other college programs, he has chosen, and wanted to remain a Hawkeye. The Gopher coaches and fans went on and on about injuries this year. Well, that's a part of the game, and one historically, that Iowa knows well. We just don't usually have the depth like some schools to overcome a lot of injuries and have a season like this year. However, Iowa had a ton of injuries this year, and a quarterback that played hurt a lot of the season. But, KF isn't gonna make excuses. And, Iowa still went 12-0. All we heard about was the schedule. So next year when Minnesota has a schedule like Iowa had this year, with or without injuries, we should expect 12-0? Iowa won the BigTen in 2004 after being decimated with injury, ending up with a walk-on fullback(?) as their starting tailback, as one position example.
Which brings me to the jist of why I probably posted this. I've spent time in Minnesota. It's a great state, with good people. But, so is Iowa, where I choose to live. There is so much crap talked about Iowa by people in MN. Not just the Hawkeyes, but the state and it's people. Now, I think people are people, and this happens everywhere, including Iowa. But, I'm talking about my experience being a Hawkeye in the Gopher state. It probably comes from a disproportionate volume of the population that are college football and basketball fans. And, probably because the two biggest rivals of Minnesota(Wisconsin and Iowa), have had so much more success in the last, I don't even know how many, years. The Gophers haven't won a Big Ten FB title since 1967. Iowa has been to 3 Final Fours, to the Gophers 0. The Gophers have won several National Titles in FB, but also, correct me if I'm wrong, in a time when there were how many teams?, and football was segregated. In fact, Ozzie Simmons, a great Iowa back, who happened to be African American, may have been a/the main catalyst behind the Floyd of Rosedale trophy. I'll let you look that up.
Then there's the issue of Minnesota and its history of not quite walking the line when it comes to staying out of trouble. Enough said on that.
Oh, and how does such a backwards state like Iowa, not your words, but definitely the sentiment I've received in the past from people I was around up there, end up with three division one BB schools(all being ranked and making the tourney), and two division one FB schools, with one having as much success as I stated above, with about half the population of a state(MN) that has only one division one school that can't make the tourney in BB and has their best season in years with a total of 8 wins in FB?
Oh, and I'm not sure about lately, but Iowa City(per capita) has been in the past. I don't remember how many years total, the most educated city in the country. So, the idea that we're all backward dolts, isn't quite accurate.
So, to sum up, we're doing ok down here.
And, to be clear. I'm not directing this at you personally. Just some frustration being let out, based on life experience. And, like I said Minnesota is a great state with great people, some of which are still good friends of mine. OK, I'm done, if anybody made it this far!
