Iowa hires East Moline high school coach? Huh?

FWIW, Webber will be a volunteer with the program and not an assistant coach.

Webber leaves United Township to take unnamed college position

Maybe the paper changed it story, but not sure where you're getting that this will be a paid position.

Paper changed the story. Initially the story was he was going to be an assistant coach, which wasn't actually what is happening. He's going to be a volunteer within the program. He hasn't done the paperwork yet and so the story was changed to more accurately represent where things are right now.

Still, it was already out there once it got published the first time. Ryan's a good guy and a very good coach. Probably just got a little excited about the opportunity and said things on the record too soon.

Based on everything in this thread, Coach Webber is an outstanding addition. I am curious what his duties will be. And, he might have some inside connections to Chicago HS basketball:)

Hopefully his wife has a good job, so he can spend a year or two with the Hawks before looking for a paid (college I assume) position.

I could be way off but I read this as an assistant coach in waiting. Maybe Speraw or Dillard are ready to leave in a year or so and Fran wanted this guy. I like the fact that he is a good defensive coach.
My thoughts exactly. I would think Sherm Dillard since he is the elder statesman on staff, but Speraw is less than a year younger so who knows.

Would make a little more sense.

I knew a guy that did this with ISU a few years back. He went with Hoiberg to the Bulls and I believe he is still assistant with the Bulls.

Is he a defensive specialist? And I don't mean that in a snarky way. I know nothing about him apart from this thread but I feel there's a lot to like here. He must really love coaching and seems dedicated to make his mark as one.

Being an ex Moline graduate, be it all of 52 years ago, I was really excited when he took the Moline men's basketball head coaching position in 2009. He is very charismatic and seems to have a knack of building programs that were down into contenders, but he can't stay in one place very long, moving on to different programs every few years.
A 1997 graduate of Galesburg High School, he's been an assistant coach at Rock Island High School, head coach at Moline, Gurnee Warren, & East Moline. I might be missing another stop in his coaching journey but you get the picture. Great guy, outstanding coaching skills. It will be interesting to see how this next stop in his coaching resume turns out. I know one thing for sure though, he's been a winner everyplace his been.

He would have been a teammate (a grade older) of Joey Range and Rod Thompson?

Can't fault the guy for bettering himself.

Ryan Webber has had a change of heart and is staying at United Township instead of taking an unpaid volunteer position at Iowa.
