Iowa House passes bill requiring 80% of UI medical school have Iowa roots

Quite honestly, don’t the House Republicans see how this just “DEI on biased steroids”…. specifically for Iowans ( who don’t measure up to the out of state competition)?

I assume the Republican Houae will bump the budgets for Dental and Med schools to make up the lost funds..

The only medical students willing to accept residencies in rural, red-assed Iowa will have last names like Patel and Zhang.

The state should lower its sights and hope for more large animal veterinarians.

Given the obesity present in Iowa’s rural communities those large animal vets should be fully qualified to provide medical support to the human population as well.

That’s the thing, they are talking about a small bump in funds, but it’s micro targeted to advance lesser qualified students. An actual funding bump to address Iowa’s woefully underserved rural areas isn’t on their radar.

Only 1/4 of Iowa medical school graduates will do their residencies in Iowa despite the critical shortage in many specialties. Iowa ranks last in Ob/Gyn practitioners per capita.
University of Iowa is the only place to do residency in Ob/Gyn in Iowa.

People that hate DEI don't understand that is what DEI stands for.
I recently saw a video of Pete Buttigieg discussing this exact point. He framed it perfectly — why would anyone want the opposite of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion? The alternatives are uniformity or homogeneity, inequity or injustice, and exclusion or segregation.

When you put it that way, who in their right mind would want that?

The opposite is a nepo baby like Donald Trump repeatedly getting boosted up in life. And, now his dipshit sons getting a boost because of who their dad is. No merit, just bloodlines. Now we have 19 year old advising on the crypto cause he’s a genius…

Schools, roads, bridges, mental health, poverty, hungry children, homeless - I guess here in Iowa all the problems associated with these topics have been solved.

Well that's phucking dumb.

BAU for the Iowa legislature.

Idiotic Outlaw Worthless Assholes
As a counterweight to the sentiments in this thread, the article stated the 80% must be Iowa residents OR people enrolled at Iowa colleges, and that currently, “an estimated 70% of students at the UI College of Medicine and College of Dentistry are Iowa residents.” Perhaps this is a way to get higher quality out of state students in the pipeline at Iowa colleges before med/dental school. In any event, it’s not like the demographic shift would be as dramatic made out here. If it’s currently 70% Iowans and the med/dental schools are ranked what they are, and there 153 new med students per year and 80 dental students, that is a total of 25 additional Iowans per year spread across both colleges. The marginal difference in qualifications would be minute.

So why waste the legislative time on this then?

I'll take MAGA's for $1000, Alex.
