Alford was hot commodity when he was hired coming off Sweet16. Lickliter was hot commodity coming of a Sweet16 and it wasn't generally known that Stephens was the mastermind. Fran jumped at the chance to move from Sienna to Iowa. There are a ton of low paid coaches from Mid majors that will jump at a chance for massive pay raise/prestige jump. TJ Otzelberger wasn't an expierenced P5 coach when ISU hired him and he's done way better than Fran ever has. Hoiberg was another inexperienced guy that did well at his 1st stop as P5 coach.

Now if Rob Howe is thinking Calipari or Altman or bringing CoachK out of retirement, yeah, not happening and no duh

Fran isn't being fired anyway, and Fan support follows coaches that win more than Fran, so I think too much protesting by Rob Howe and his ilk.

WE probably have Fran for this year and maybe next. I haven't seen a contract extension. Rob Howe needs to take his opinons to the Iowa AD.

Whether that translates into better defense, remains to be seen. I think that our current guards (at least Dix and Thelwell) play better defense than we have seen since Gesell and Sapp at the beginning of Fran's tenure. Figuring out how to incorporate the other more athletic players, like Traore, into a team defense still needs to happen. Our bigs need to be aggressive, but smart and not making reaching fouls, and it would greatly improve the interior offense, which still sucks. Patrick moving on should have been a blessing.

There are coaches doing a whole lot more with a whole lot less. And I'll also argue that the money will flow in from boosters when/if we hire a coach they can get excited about. Unfortunately, with Fran they have lost hope. Who throws money at something they don't believe in?

Maybe not super athletic, but Dix and Thelwell are pretty damn good on both ends. Dembele can actually shoot, but he needs to be turned loose. Let's see if Traore gets better as he plays more regularly. You don't need 5 great shooters on the court to be really good, just like you don't have to have 5 super athletes. But, you better have both, and hopefully a few who are athletic and skilled.

My memory could be bad, but I thought Sapp was a pretty good defender.

I agree Fran seems to be recruiting more athletic players. Hopefully he gets some more NIL funds to hit the portal with this spring. While I am not predicting this, Fran could turn Iowa into the winner we had always hoped for if he finds a way to land a point guard of consequence and the athletes he is bringing in means better defense.

Obviously, I agree with the perception of Fran ball, but it’s also true that Fran knows how to take average talent and turn them into offensive juggernauts. He’s also shown a knack to identify exceptional talent early on in the recruiting process only to be bridesmaided in the end. Assuming Fran still wants to be here, it’s not out of the realm of possibilities that his Iowa career could have a similar trajectory as Lisa Bluder’s IF he is able to finally land those 1-2 star players he’s always chased because he can actually throw some money at them. Imagine some of Fran’s teams with a BJ Armstrong or an Andre Woolridge or a Dean Oliver to run along side Jok, White, Uthoff, and Woody, or insert one of them in the lineup with Garza, Weezy, and the Murray twins. Holy shit.

I'd take exception with JBo's playing time. He won a few games with his shooting & FT's. His defense wasn't good, but he's one of the best shooters ever to wear the uniform at Iowa.

Some excerpts:

Labeling Carver-Hawkeye Arena as dated is being kind. Little has changed for the average fan experience since Tom Davis walked the sideline.

For many folks, it's a hike to the bathrooms and concessions with long lines upon arrival. Accessibility is challenging with only one public elevator. The call for moving the student section stretches back to the '90s, at least.

It took way too long to build a practice facility. And the investment paled in comparison to the new wrestling facility or the indoor football facility.

The NIL contributions for men's basketball lag behind the competition. Inside its own department, other programs and the athletic department as a whole vie for a limited amount of dollars. This ain't Michigan or Ohio State.

You may not like it, but the commitment to men's basketball makes it a tough place to win at the highest level. We have a pretty darn big sample size of evidence showing it.

Move the student section. If that means the media sits at the top of the arena, so be it.

Put vendors in the stands. Add restrooms. Get creative with promotions.

Oh yeah, almost forgot, let's not compare the men's and women's basketball programs. The latter was selling out because a generational talent made it the best it's ever been and must-see entertainment. It was awesome. It's also not easily replicated.

Hopefully Beth Goetz is a student of her men's basketball program's history. Then she'll see that the path to reaching greater heights starts with a bigger investment in it.

This will also allow current nil funds to be diverted to get some top talent.
Iowa will be splitting about 26 million (22% of app 118 million) . As a point of reference this will be top 6 in the Big 10 and much higher than any Big 12 team (ISU will be working off a revenue of $83 million), all of the teams in the ACC that reported.
Iowa feels they can get very competitive unless Beth screws it up...

The only viable "invest in the program" that I see is the locker rooms. Aren't they already moving the student section? I was there quite some time back for NCAA wrestling Nationals. The place was packed and using the restrooms wasn't a problem unless you hit it during a "break". Even then, it was only about 2 minutes. The NIL is totally out of Iowa's hands as that is private donors. Some innovative "entertainment" would help. That putt putt during halftime seems lame.

As you can see in the report below, 90% of the revenue sharing is going to football and men's basketball players.

Not sure what you mean when you say Iowa will be on the higher end of revenue sharing; I guess we might be able to outspend some Power 4 schools but I doubt, when it comes to revenue sharing, that we will be outspending "basketball schools."

See what follows. This could be $276,923/ year in revenue sharing for each of the 13 scholarship players. But, again, these payments will be happening at most Power 4 schools.

This is just my opinion about revenue sharing. Supposedly it evens the field but why would the big dogs who've been putting up all of this nil.money want to suddenly stop? Me thinks they'll still be trying to buy the best players just not do it above board. Kind.of like how it was before nil

Every job in the Big East, SEC, and Big 10 will be better than any other job in any other conference starting in 2025. In fact, many smaller schools will become highly competitive due to the fact they can throw their whole budgets behind their basketball teams.
