Well they sure finished the year like the '08 team started.Pretty sure Ferentz said last August that the team reminded him of an early 2008 team.
Even looking back, I don't think that comparison was that far off. Last years team, as disappointing as it was, was not as far off as some people think. The real difference was LB play and a circus at QB that got out of control, rather than solved as it was in '08. Just fix the LB play and we get probably three more wins last year. The '08 team was a flawed and incomplete team, as was the '14 team. Clearly the '08 team came together and was really good at the end, whereas the '14 team regressed badly...but the core components are not that far off. I think going into '15 we have a chance to be pretty good, and building toward getting back to being a force in '16 if the team can continue to improve. I think even though the O-line will be more of a work in progress this year, the RB's will be far more dynamic and dangerous (I am expecting big things out of Daniels and company), the LB play cannot be worse (I think they will actually be a pleasant surprise) and I think our D-line has a chance to be nasty. If CJ can play to his potential, I think our offense could be pretty decent. It really wasn't that bad last year, and honestly, it was the defense, or lack thereof, that was a bigger factor in most of our losses. And that is where I expect to see the most improvement, starting with the aforementioned LB's. Clearly, our schedule is not murderers row...so I am actually expecting an '08-like year. At least 8 wins, and while we will likely drop a game two that will leave us scratching our heads, I think we will get some big wins along the way and start rounding into form and looking dangerous in November.Pretty sure Ferentz said last August that the team reminded him of an early 2008 team.
One thing I found interesting was when CJ was being interviewed he brought up about how they missed or passed on lot of big play passes last season. Mentioned routes but then phrased it as we (as I interpreted JR) and not he was asked again about when they missed shots at big plays. Just more of an emphasis on it this year having more of them.
On flip side Phil Parker said way too many big plays given up and too few turnovers by the D.
Phil should be in that SNL skit from a long time ago: "President Kennedy has been shot?!?!?!"
Wasn't it Buckwheat?
CJ also talked about the difference in leadership being demonstrated. At first it seemed like he was throwing JR under the bus, but the more I think about it, it likely wasn't as much poor leadership from Jake as much as a vacuum of leadership caused by confusion. Everybody's been talking about CJ arranging workouts, throwing sessions, etc ....really driving all of that....and I wonder.....how'd that go last year? One thing I found interesting was when CJ was being interviewed he brought up about how they missed or passed on lot of big play passes last season. While the whole Buckwheat thing was classic ("lets...take a look"), they had a skit where they were interviewing people about where they were the day Kennedy was assassinated. When they asked the 'people' on the set they all reacted like they didn't know he'd been killed. It was pretty solid. I'd find it online and link to it, but I'm feeling lazy today![]()
