Iowa Penn State Game Preview and Prediction

I sense some bad blood between Ferentz and Franklin.

I haven't studied PSU enough to make a prediction but I do have a wish: Iowa in victory formation at end of game, snap, quick knee and Nate Stanley punts the ball into the stands.

We are going to have to run the ball and stop the pass. We do those 2 things effectively, we win by 10, 27 - 17.

Iowa is gonna have to play 4 quarters of flawless football. Mcsorley is a game changer who can take over a game. Some of our dbs will be in a hostile environment for the first time.

Hawks 31
PSU. 34

Hope I’m wrong on this one

Too much McSorey I’m afraid

Brent’s and Moss. They haven’t had to play in a tough environment yet.
Both played in Minneapolis and Bloomington. I've been to games at Minnesota and that venue is definitely hostile...… Indiana not as much. I'll concede that Penn State is a more hostile environment than the previous road games, but it is not their first.

As noted, Hawks have to figure out how to contain mcsorely.
Shouldn't be high winds; Stanley and the O will have to ramp back up to the kind of plays they were making in the passing game against the goophs and indy.

I don’t think it’s bad blood so much as it is difficult to respect a guy like Franklin. He’s the antithesis of KFz in many ways.

Who wins? Iowa is playing better, but how will a talented PSU team come out to play? This is a weird game because either team could roll the other. I think KFz will put a lot into this one and I think Franklin will too. This game is about respect for both programs - iowa gaining it and PSU maintaining it. I do think Iowa is the mentally tougher team and they can capitalize on this by being extremely physical with PSU. if Iowa can turn this game into a slug fest, I like their chances.

Psu defense is not great Iowa's offense should be a able to pick them apart with the passing game and wear down they're front 4. The defense will give Trace fits it will be the best one he's seen this year contain him and iowa wins big if not iowa wins a close one

Barkley has been our real problem the last two years (especially when they let him run for 40 yds. after he is down). McSorley had Barkley, threw for over 200 yds. passing and had over 50 yds rushing going into the last drive last year and still only had 15 points on the board. Without Barkley to bail him out, we will stymie their running back, harass and hit McSorley all day and limit them to between 10-20 points. I'm telling you, this D will play angry after his stunt at the end of the game last year and we have plenty of bodies to send after him. If we can put up over 20 points (which Illinois was able to do), we win this game.

Stanley will need to play his best game of the year, because we can't win this game if we're not balanced.

It would be nice if we had Hankins and OJ available in case our young corners do struggle.

My prediction; Iowa 24- 17

It will be in McSorleys hands. 2 good playmakers at Wideout but nobody close to Barkley on that roster (thank god). TM knows how to win but Hawk D will be tough. The biggest mismatch is Iowa O vs. Lion D. Keep turnovers to a minimum and Hawks win by 12.

Very interesting matchup this week. I predict a BREAKOUT game from Fant. 8 rec, 140 yards, 2TDs. Too much offense for PSU in somewhat of a shootout. McSorely is going to be productive but I believe our D is good enough to limit his success. Don't see anyone on PSU that can cover our TEs. I have a gut feeling Fant puts his stamp on the Mackey this week.

IOWA- 38
PSU- 27

Up until the last few weeks I had PSU winning this game convincingly.

Today? I think this well-oiled Iowa team is playing with confidence and continues to improve each week. Our defense is on fire ... PSU is good ... But this Iowa team seems to have "it" this season ...

Iowa 27
PSU 17

I think Morehouse tweeted this, but Indiana had 100 offensive snaps against Penn State D on Saturday. No Iowa defensive lineman played more than 25 snaps on Saturday vs. Maryland (out of 39 total).

Found it:

PSU defense is down... Iowa offense is up. Iowa should be able to move the ball and score better than last year. The best defense against McPunt is to keep him off the field. Iowa holds an advantage on both lines too. They have better RB and QB... Iowa has better TEs. Iowa can stop their offense, not sure they can stop Iowa's. SO... it comes down to mistakes and special teams. If Iowa plays clean in turnovers and penalties... I think they'll win.

you are playing good.. but Wisconsin got stomped by BYU and Iowa took the gas pipe against them. This is a real road game and your QB is slower than snot. It will be a should be a good game. When you've beaten PSU (surprisingly they somehow stomped the ever living life out you while on sanctions) you've run the ball well. Your run game is mediocre this year, and you couldn't move the ball an inch in Iowa City last year. Iowa is a decent team, but hasn't played anybody as of yet.

The OSU/PSU game was a slug fest, it decimated both teams for the following 2 games. If you watch PSU/MSU and Indy/OSU both teams looked really sluggish following the game. As far as the transitive property... ie Hawks crushed Indiana.. I saw a mediocre Hawks team push the Lions last year, and mediocre Hawk team slaughter a tired OSU team. If PSU plays well I would give Iowa a 25% at best.. if PSU plays like they have vs MSU/Indy... it will be a 4th Q nail biter.

PSU is MUCH FASTER.. but much younger, the draft and graduation have decimated PSU experience wise. Hawks best chance is ball control.. but they'll have to get more than 3 each time. I generally like Iowa, prob about the only team in the whole league I actually root for from time to time outside of PSU.. I like your coach and your kids play tough, clean football.

Penn State's last three games:

Lost to OSU 27-26
Lost to MSU 21-17
Beat Indiana 33-28

PSU's next three games:
#18 Iowa
#5 Michigan
#20 Wisconsin

Conclusion: Iowa has a chance, and PSU has a tough road ahead.

You can limit the pass but then you have to deal with the dbag who's always trying to hit an imaginary ball with an imaginary bat.

Very tough to do both.

I see with defense was on the field quite a bit vs. Indiana. Is their D line/linebackers a weakness?

I believe the Hawks defense will keep us in every game we play. Hawks are too good and will beat Penn St. Defense travels well!!!

While I agree that PSU may have better overall team speed, both of these teams are nearly identical in terms of youth on the depth chart.

Starting 2 deeps: Freshmen and Sophomores on Offense - PSU - 9 - IOWA - 12 Freshmen and Sophomores on Defense - PSU - 12 - IOWA - 11
This is just the offense and defense - does not include specialists (kickers, holders, etc.)

This is not the IOWA team you saw last year. I'm sorry, but I think PSU is the team that will need to play close to perfect to win.

PSU has the talent to win.. they should be undefeated (led by double digits late in both games) but they are not. I was at the last Iowa game at PSU.. the Hawks O literally pissed down their leg all night with a senior QB. It was one of the 5 worst physical beatings the Hawks have taken in the last 10 years.
