U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley’s approval numbers among Iowans remain mostly unchanged as he runs for an eighth term in office: By a narrow margin, more Iowans approve than disapprove of his job performance.
According to a new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll, 45% of Iowans approve of the way the Republican senator is doing his job, while 43% disapprove and 12% are not sure.
The results show steady approval for Grassley, 88, since the last Iowa Poll in November. Meanwhile, his disapproval numbers have inched up slightly from 41% in November.
Over the course of four polls conducted in 2021, Grassley’s approval numbers fluctuated between 45% and 48%, while his disapproval numbers climbed from 38% to 41%. Last year was also the first time the Iowa Poll recorded Grassley’s approval numbers dipping below 50% for a sustained period.

Now, Grassley is viewed favorably by 47% of Iowans and unfavorably by 40% in the latest poll. The gap between the percent of Iowans who view Grassley favorably to those who don't decreased by 7 percentage points from the last time the question was asked in September 2021. Last fall, 51% of Iowans viewed Grassley favorably and 37% viewed him unfavorably. The 40% unfavorable rating in the current poll is the highest Grassley has gotten in an Iowa Poll.
Meanwhile, Grassley’s two most prominent Democratic challengers — former U.S. Rep. Abby Finkenauer and retired Navy admiral Mike Franken — remain unknown to many Iowans. Just under half don’t know enough about Finkenauer to form an opinion, while two-thirds are unfamiliar with Franken.
The poll of 813 Iowa adults was conducted from Feb. 28 to March 2 by Selzer & Co. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
