Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller leads challenger Brenna Bird by 16 percentage points among likely voters, a new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll shows.

Forty-nine percent of likely voters say they would vote for Miller, a Democrat, compared with 33% who choose Bird, a Republican. Another 5% say they would vote for someone else, 7% say they would not vote and 6% are not sure.

Miller is the longest-serving attorney general in the country and is seeking an 11th term this year. He is running on a message that he has used the law to serve ordinary Iowans through consumer protection efforts and lawsuits against opioid manufacturers.

He faces a spirited challenge from Bird, the Guthrie County attorney, who has emphasized her support for law enforcement and accused Miller of a lack of commitment to the job.

Bird has received an influx of cash from state and national Republicans, who view the race as competitive. She reported raising more than $2.3 million in the most recent fundraising period, which included $1.8 million from the Republican Attorneys General Association and $150,000 from the state Republican Party.

Miller raised more than $1 million, including $800,000 from the Democratic Attorneys General Association.

Miller does best with Iowan voters with college degrees (59%), women (58%), city dwellers (58%), residents of northeast Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District (57%) and those ages 65 and older (56%).

Bird leads with voters who are evangelicals (54%), rural residents (42%) and residents of northwestern Iowa’s 4th Congressional District (37%).

The poll of 804 Iowa adults has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. On the head-to-head contest, which was asked of 620 likely voters, the margin of error is plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.

The poll was conducted Oct. 9-12 by Selzer & Co.
