Iowa sporting events in Minny

Trucks are starting to refuse deliveries there. More and more police move on. 100% vote by city council to defund police. Why would any college team want to go play the Goofs in Minny with no guarantee of protection?
I've heard there are calls in KC to defund the police as well. So seriously, who do the folks think they are going to call when they need help? Are they anticipating a private security force? Won't they just end up hiring some of the same people that were police?

I’m seeing a lot of hysteria regarding defunding of police. I think most of that is due to people not understanding what exactly that means. It doesn’t mean the elimination of all LE BTW.
Certainly not trying to add to the sky is falling crowd, but I'd admit to being somewhat uninformed on the subject. What exactly does it mean? Would LE to still have the necessary manpower to provide service to larger municipalities? Who would oversee them? I'm assuming this is the main concern is who actually oversee's police and how are they reviewed.
Its interesting that there are calls for defunding police in KC. To my knowledge its the only decent sized city where the police are not under the direct control of the city but a private organization.

Why would you want to play a game in a city that has no security force? I would assume that the State of Iowa is responsible for U of I player safety. Hell, why not just play the game in Mogadishu. LOL

It's going to be fine. Just because the university cut ties with the police force doesn't mean there will be no security. You're welcome to watch on TV at home if you're so concerned.

I will watch the game from my TV, not that I am concerned, but because I have a job. that aside, why would the state be happy to have students from a state university playing at a school with no police force? You think Stadium security is going to follow the team through town to the airport, or follow the bus out of town? I am not saying it won't be fine, but would you want to be the person responsible if something does happen?

They're not hiring the police force from Minneapolis. That's not to say they can't hire St. Paul or any other very large suburb with very large police forces.

The amount of old white men on here who think just stepping foot in Minnesota or Minneapolis means your life is in danger is quite hilarious.

Last time Iowa played @ Minnesota, did they only get out alive because of a police escort? People aren't randomly attacking each other or innocent parties, playing a football game isn't going to incite violence against our players.

Someone out East did this and it seems to have worked. I believe they fired all of them and than rehired the ones they wanted and hired new ones also. So it really wasn’t getting rid of all of them. I just can’t remember which city it was.
Camden, NJ is a big shell game. It was done for financial reasons. County took over. They actually have more LEO but are paying them half as much. Still has the 4th highest murder rate per capita.

I am glad you know the age and race of all the forum members. Did you happen to see on the news that houses in Minneapolis for sale rose 18% within seven days of the riots? Next will be business's moving, which one factory that was burnt has already stated they are moving. Of course, I am sure those are all old white men moving. ;)

After what has transpired with the Iowa football program, you are naive if you think people won’t be going after them due to their racism charge from former athletes. Now, more than ever, they will need security as they enter the city in their buses as well as the team tractor trailer with all their gear arriving prior to their arrival. I’m sure it will get spray painted at some point and wouldn’t doubt on the first trip out of town to Minneapolis.

It is not going to fall apart over night and the cops will not be disbanded over night. There will be a slow systematic decay of policing and a rise in crime and violence. When Baltimore charged all those cops (and charges were dropped and the cops found not guilty) LEO's told me the Baltimore police where simply going to stop getting out of their cars and doing their jobs. That is exactly what happened and violent crime rose significantly. With the stupidity of the Atlanta Mayor on national display, Cops are not going to get out of their car or doing their jobs and things are going to turn into a disaster. The second amendment is going to be more important than ever moving forward.

People are moving???

Man then idk how they're ever going to have sporting events in Minneapolis again, what with how every teams' lives are at risk just entering the city.

Apparently if Minneapolis defunds or gets rid of police it will become Escape from NY...

You must have been sleeping through all the riots, looting, burning businesses, and burning cars. You take a very strong sleeping medication. Happy dreams.

No, I was fully awake for the riots, looting, burning businesses, and burning cars.

You're speaking as though Minneapolis is currently a war zone. It's not.

If the Minneapolis Police force is defunded the Hennepin County Sheriff's department will be expanded. It isn't going to be a free for all.

Another side affect of this will be significantly increased auto and home insurance rates for any area without a police force.

Hennepin County will not police Minneapolis for free. It will be like other municipalities that rely on outside policing. Hennepin county will send a very large bill for Minneapolis to pay. If it is not payed, they will not police Minneapolis.

It's always been a free for all, that's what Liberal Hellholes are like. Catch and release criminal programs, people with rap sheets longer than national "hero" (boy has that definition went completely in the shitter) George Floyd running wild on your streets. Vote Democrat, watch your City burn, watch your businesses and your jobs evaporate, then cry some more wondering how it could be. LOL! Another thing Dems don't seem to understand, the criminals don't give one rat's ass how you vote, they don't care about your skin color. You are next. Keep voting these idiots into office, you're going to get EXACTLY what you deserve.

And lastly, I would never allow a child of mine to attend an inner city crime ridden University like Minnesota, BEFORE all of this.

I’m seeing a lot of hysteria regarding defunding of police. I think most of that is due to people not understanding what exactly that means. It doesn’t mean the elimination of all LE BTW.

The City Charter of Minneapolis calls for a minimum police force based on population. Minneapolis’ charter now states that the council “must fund a police force of at least 0.0017 employees per resident, and provide for those employees’ compensation.” Based on the latest census data, that amounts to roughly 730 police employees. The department had 892 sworn officers and 175 non-sworn employees as of June 1.

There are four ways to amend a city charter.

The council can try to pass an ordinance changing the charter, but that option is generally reserved for “noncontroversial or housekeeping amendments.” To go that route, the council would need to vote 13-0, then receive approval from the mayor.

The council now has 12 members while it awaits an Aug. 11 special election to replace Abdi Warsame, who resigned to head the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority.

Mayor Jacob Frey has indicated he does not support the full abolishment of the police department.

The remaining scenarios would all require approval from voters. Residents could petition to get an item on the ballot. They would need at least 10,356 signatures to get that process started. The Charter Commission could propose a charter amendment.

But many in city government expect it would likely unfold another way.

The City Council could introduce an ordinance that would seek to amend the City Charter. Voters would have to approve the charter change.

Defunding ain't happening any time soon.

Read about the reforms in Camden, NJ, over the last decade. Defunding the police is about reducing budgets, rethinking budget priorities, retraining, giving law enforcement people incentives to resolve situations peacefully--without writing tickets, without arresting people, and without using force, especially lethal force.

Camden's law enforcement is now under control of the county rather than the city and, while still far from perfect, its improvement has been dramatic.
